Smiths Interconnect’s cutting-edge solutions shortlisted as finalists at IEA 2025 for their high reliability in mission-critical applications

For this year’s Instrumentation & Electronics Awards three products have been shortlisted as finalists.

n the category “Cables & Connectors Product of the Year” we have the new high speed data transmission modules for modular connectors and the new high frequency SMPM Mini-lock connector. In the category “Semiconductors Product of the Year” we have the new DaVinci Gen V Test Socket.
The new Cat5e and Cat6A data modules for modular connectors offer robust performance in terms of electric requirement, and EMC shielding to external sources for protection and minimization crosstalk. The electrical performance of these modules is optimized through low insertion loss, controlled impedance, and high return loss characteristics, which contribute to efficient signal transmission with minimal attenuation and reflection, reducing data transmission errors and ensuring high-speed communication. Both new solutions can be used in the
standard versions of the modular and minimodular series as well as in those compliant to EN45545 requirements for fire safety, and offer the following distinctive technical features and benefits: high reliability Hyperboloid contact technology, 100,000 mating cycles as a connector, high-quality insulator material, and snap-in contacts. By offering a high insulation resistance and low dielectric constant, the material supports consistent signal propagation and prevents unwanted capacitance effects. Moreover, its thermal and mechanical stability ensures long-term reliability, even in demanding environmental conditions.
The high frequency SMPM Mini-Lock connector enables a new level of reliability for mission critical applications with an operating temperature range between -65 °C to 165 °C. Mini-Lock cable assemblies can operate up to 110 GHz with very low insertion loss and VSWR covering a wide variety of applications. Patent pending technology is utilized to avoid common electrical bead resonance and other RF issues found at very high frequencies. A key feature of the patent pending new product is an innovative new ‘robust locking mechanism’ that creates a more reliable connection and a better transfer of data and information download between connected applications. harsh mechanical stress environments such as radars, satellites, space flight, military, UAV and UGV applications. DaVinci sockets for high speed test offer a revolutionary solution for production ruggedness and signal integrity. The latest addition to the series is the DaVinci Gen V test socket, specifically engineered to meet the demands of semiconductor manufacturers. It enables full functional testing of next-generation ASIC devices at 224 Gbps with unmatched accuracy and repeatability. The DaVinci Gen V solves the fundamental industry challenges of impedance tuning – an essential part of circuit design that enables maximum transfer of signal power – and signal integrity – the measurement of quality of an electrical signal as it travels through a circuit. By tackling these challenges the DaVinci Gen V ensures reliable, super high performance in electronic systems and testing. Smiths Interconnect’s design team utilizes extensive system simulation models throughout product development to ensure an optimal solution for each test environment. We also perform design validation and RF measurements which exceed the industry’s stringent test requirements ensuring excellent performance and quick test system bring up.
