and ask us for a filter without knowing exactly what they need. We are often asked to help in the design process well before pre-compliance testing. We often start by asking a series of questions about the equipment for example, what voltage, what current rating, and what dimensions or standards apply. At the early design stage, you need to make sure you have the biggest filter available at the input source, in the knowledge that it is probably going to be overkill, but it means that when you come around to testing the product you already know the worst case filter to use.
We have a good mix of people contacting us who either do not know what to do so we can train and educate them, and others who know exactly what they haven’t done but they still need our help. We have long- term customers who return to us time and again as well as new customers and we can be involved in testing something as small as a coffee machine or medical device through to a large industrial piece of equipment around 6m high.
Are the tools you use the same whatever the product or equipment? Yes. The only limitations are voltage and current ratings. A line impedance stabilisation network (LISN) will give an application a good clean power source but they can be

expensive, especially if the customer is not carrying out testing every single day. So we offer current clamps and voltage probes which do essentially the same job as a LISN but are much lower cost. The process and set-up are the same in that you have measuring points and a power supply source. Some standards require you to use different impedances for the LISNs and different testing techniques but if you’re just carrying out pre-compliance testing our tools will usually produce results that are extremely close.
Finally, is working in pre-compliance testing interesting and fulfilling? Definitely. We all like to test at Schaffner and, personally speaking, PCT is enormous fun. You get to understand the end-user more because it’s not just pass and fail, there is room for more artistic flair so that you are able to try something new. What makes Schaffner stand apart from its competitors is that while plenty of companies can make filters they don’t have the level of expertise that we do, they don’t have the 60+ years of knowledge and experience of creating filters and chokes and understanding EMC. We know what we are doing in the field of PCT and it is not just a service, we love it!
