Front End | Electronic Components Supply Network
However, IDEA members acknowledge that this period of strong ‘Billings’ growth is coming to an end as ‘Bookings’ start to decline across the electronic components supply network into the second half of the year. It’s vital for all organisations that the ‘equilibrium phase’ continues to progress, but great care must be taken to avoid problems for supply network partners. The current collective thoughts of IDEA members are that the European market for electronic components will return to growth in Q1’24, but I think they’re being a tad optimistic. Sadly, I believe that we will not see growth return until at least Q2’24. Only time will tell whose ‘crystal ball’ was lucky or correct!
further 28% over the twelve-month period. It’s apparent that ‘Bookings’ growth peaked in Q1’22 before entering a period of decline spanning the third and fourth quarters of 2022 and into 1H’23. This trend is widely expected to continue into 2H’23 as components manufacturer lead-times ‘normalised’ and customers begin the process of reducing their supplier order cover and in-house inventory in-line with product availability. ‘Bookings’ growth is however predicted to make a return in European markets in 1H’24. N.B. It’s interesting to note
that the UK remains an ‘outlier’ (along with the Nordic region) and is actually showing growth whilst other countries are reporting steep declines.
Concluding thoughts
Improvements in component supply and international logistics helped manufacturers of electronic components and their authorised distributors in Europe to continue to make record shipments in Q2’23 to OEM customers, despite the ongoing political and economic turmoil.
About IDEA
Founded in 1984 the International Distribution of Electronics Association (IDEA) is a not-for- profi t organisation that collectively represents >80% of the European Distributor Total Available Market (DTAM). Each month IDEA collects and consolidates statistical data from its member associations across Europe and publishes the data in the form of headline information to provide interested parties with a wider understanding of prevailing trends in the electronic components industry. Many member organisations use the full data set of IDEA statistics as a benchmark with which to review their individual performance relative to the trends that have emerged across the entire market.
