graphs illustrate these characteristics. The fi rst (Figure 1) shows that, at a constant current of 50mA, the Murata high-drain part can deliver more energy, in a more useful way than the standard variant can, by sustaining an output voltage of at least 1V for more of its discharge curve.
The second graph (Figure 2) illustrates this advantage in a slightly different way, by showing how the cell’s output voltage changes over time when driving a standard load. It’s useful to think of this performance in the context of the end user experience: being able to sustain nearly the OCV voltage
(1.55V) output for approximately 240 hours (see Figure 4 to make your own estimate of where the fi rst knee in the curve is) would enable a device that needed a nominal 1.55V supply to run for at least ten days without user intervention. Using the Murata SR927R cell to power more sophisticated electronics that could operate at voltages of less than 1.55V would translate to even greater end- user convenience.
The SR44R cells offer the same 1.55V nominal voltage as the SR927R parts but have a much greater energy storage capacity, of 150mAh. Their maximum discharge current
Figure 4
into a standard load of 4.7kΩ is 120mA, which can be sustained for up to 100ms at an output voltage greater than 1.2V. As Figure 3 shows, this pulse discharge current is almost three times as high as that which can be sustained by the standard, SR44 parts. Figure 4 shows that the SR44R parts can also deliver more of the energy that they store at useful operating voltages than the standard parts can. As demand for more sophisticated healthcare grows so will demand for more sophisticated medical devices. These
devices will pack in more sensing and analysis and will usually communicate with cloud-based analysis services and healthcare providers. All this functionality will have to be powered by battery cells optimised for healthcare technologies, provided by responsible manufacturers from facilities that can meet the increasingly tough safety and regulatory requirements being imposed on the industry.
