COVER STORY

Novel lighting and indicator solutions made in Britain

Status indication is used in almost all applications, whether it’s to show the device is simply powered on or in standby mode, through to more advanced applications including safety systems where the indicator must be reliable and function correctly when it’s needed. The humble indicator is an essential part of most electronic designs. Over the years indication technology has moved from incandescent bulbs or neons to LED technology which provides greater reliability, lifetime and robustness along with a much wider range of colour options. These indicators cover a wide range of applications from PCBs to status panels. They are also used in bulkhead lighting units which are used in rail and construction environments to provide warnings to drivers and operators of heavy machinery. In this month’s edition Anglia introduces the range of lighting and indicator solutions, customisation options and manufacturing services available from MARL International.

E

stablished in Ulverston, UK in 1973, MARL International has been at the forefront of LED technology for over 50 years. Over the decades, MARL has evolved as LED technology became bright and efficient enough to expand from simple indication into general and more specialised lighting solutions. Today MARL products are used and relied upon across a diverse range of market segments including leisure park rides, industrial machines, film & stage, construction, medical, scientific, rail and defence.

where redesign is not economical or practical, or for maintenance on legacy equipment already deployed in the field.

Manufactured at MARL’s factory in Ulverston, the famous PCB and panel mount lineup of durable LED components and accessories use the highest grade materials and feature high-quality white light and full spectrum RGB technology. Offered in a range of standard sizes and colour options, they can also be customised to the exact requirement of the application.

Bulb replacement

The MARL bulb replacement range utilises LED technology to offer improved reliability and significant energy reduction. They are offered with a variety of voltage ratings, cap styles and bases to replace most filament bulbs used in legacy designs. Typically used in panel indicators, push button switches, annunciator panels or backlight illumination systems, MARL’s bulb replacement products offer an extremely convenient upgrade solution

10 May 2024 Components in Electronics Panel indicators

These versatile and long-lasting panel indicators are offered in a vast range of sizes and styles. Originally designed and introduced to the market over 40 years ago, the range has been developed and grown to take advantage of the technical innovations during the subsequent years. Offering exceptional value for money, these products require minimal maintenance and have been designed with reliability in mind. The range is offered in standard panel mounting hole size options from 5.0mm to 13.0mm in every LED colour including white and multicolour RGB. Lenses can be specified with a water clear, diffused or smoked finish. The products are all sealed to IP67 standards and feature full internal potting to resist shock and vibration. Some models are designed specifically for high vibration environments or to offer additional vandal resistance. Bezel material

options include anodised aluminium, nickel plated brass and stainless steel, allowing for their use in a wide range of environmental conditions; this includes models designed for extreme environments demanded by military applications tested down to -51°C temperatures. Terminations are via PCB pins, terminals or flying leads and the products are offered in a range of standard voltages complete with reverse protection diodes. Semi- custom and full customisations can also be accommodated across the entire range to meet individual project specifications. Customisation options include alternative bezel finishes, bespoke voltages, alternative lens colours, different terminations or flying lead lengths and laser etching to add the customer’s logo or part number details to the indicator body. PCB indicators

Rounding out the standard indicator product range are the PCB indicators. These indicators use flame retardant housings to UL94 V-0 and are offered in 3mm and 5mm
