Embedded Technology Supplement

Edge AI computing accelerate smart transportation

By Crystal Tseng, director of product center at DFI I

n recent years, countries around the world have launched net-zero carbon emission campaigns to accelerate intelligent transformation in the transportation industry. Leveraging emerging technologies such as AI edge computing, C-V2X, and 5G to realize the sustainable vision of net-zero carbon emissions has become a global common goal. “Computing units” play the most critical role in driving intelligent transformation. DFI, a global specialist in embedded solution and Edge AI computing technology, has concentrated its technical strength, accumulated from over 40 years of cultivating computing platforms, as well as connected its industry partners with Qisda Group resources. From on-board units (OBU) and roadside units (RSU) to human machine interfaces (HMI), DFI has built a comprehensive smart transportation solution and become an industry partner for promoting the deployment of new applications.

Carbon reduction drives the acceleration of smart transportation As global warming intensifies, carbon reduction has become one of the most important missions in this century. The United Nations Climate Change Summit has called on all countries to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Upon closer examination of the primary contributors to global carbon emissions, it becomes evident that the transportation industry accounts for a quarter of total carbon emissions. Transportation tools such as cars and motorcycles, or technology applications such as smart pole, license plate recognition, and traffic management systems are aimed at realising the vision of smart cities with safer and more convenient traffic environments. Progress has been made in this regard year by year, and the current trend of carbon reduction has provided an accelerated driving force for further development in recent years. For example, in terms of transportation, the automotive industry is transforming toward electrification while the evolution of

technologies such as AI, 5G, and cloud moves toward intelligent transformation. In addition to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) becoming almost standard equipment, applications such as Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) and Fleet Management Systems (FMS) have also begun to gain attention. It is almost a general industry consensus that the usage of automotive chips will increase significantly in the future. British research company IDTechEx has clearly indicated that the demand for automotive chips will increase exponentially in the next decade. This result establishes not only the growth trend of intelligent transformation in the automobile industry, but also of emerging applications and innovations related to smart transportation.

Taking charge of computing power and integrating industry ecosystem, DFI comprehensively deploys smart transportation

Facing the transformation of the transportation industry, DFI has kept up with the times by

leveraging the up-to-date technologies and launched a series of vehicle-specific products targeting the mainstream markets such as Edge AI, T-Box, Driver HMI and OBU to aim at mainstream markets including fleet management, autonomous driving, and road management. Using their own technologies as the foundation and integrating external software and hardware partners, DFI has participated in alliances such as MIH and 5G Smart Pole Standard Promotion Alliance to implement their plans comprehensively. Thanks to years of industry experience, DFI is skilled in creating embedded solution and products that keep up with trends. Because Edge AI emphasizes computing performance, DFI launched a new high- performance, fan-less in-vehicle system VC500-CMS, which is based on the 10th generation Intel Xeon or Core processors combined with NVIDIA embedded MXM graphics module to meet AI accelerating demand in edge computing. The optional two 10G fiber ports or four PoE ports

provide the capability to accept the bunch video data from sensors. DFI also created the VC900-M8M, the telematics boxes (T-BOX), that equipped with the NXP i.MX8M processor supporting various communication interface like CAN bus, LTE, GNSS, Wifi and even C-V2X for integrating vehicle information and driving mode data. In addition, the VC900-M8M leads the industry in introducing xCarbon, a vehicle network security solution from VicOne (Trend Micro subsidiary) that effectively prevents and defends against internet risks in the vehicle connected world. Additionally, DFI offers 7” and 10” driver HMI VP series that combine the high-resolution displays to show drivers vehicle information and t-box function to collect vehicle status. Last and not the least, the built in 6-axis sensor (IMU) is helpful for fleet management to understand driver’s behaviour. There are several successful deployments in electric bus to improve public transportation service worldwide. The simple, easy-to- read, and interactive interface allowed drivers to concentrate on driving, enhancing both safety and efficiency. With the trend of carbon reduction, people’s eagerness for improved driving safety and efficiency, as well as the rapid development of technologies such as 5G, Edge AI, and Internet of Vehicles, the intelligent transformation of the transportation industry has taken great strides forward and become a foreseeable future. DFI will continue to develop innovative hardware technologies and create miniature embedded solutions with features such as best performance per watts, flexible expansion, ruggedness and reliability. DFI will also actively integrate the industry’s power and use complete technologies and services to support the transportation industry in achieving their intelligent transformation goals.
