bearing a US company logo in all probability the device was manufactured offshore, either by a wholly owned subsidiary of the US company or more likely, by a local third-party organisation. Many customers for such components may therefore be relatively unaffected by the latest tariff changes and with the help of their authorised distributor partners, may be able to use Free Trade Zones within the US to avoid tariffs on any incoming shipments of components (from China) that are destined for subsequent export out of the US. Alternatively, they might be able to arrange for their suppliers to ‘drop-ship’ directly to them via third party countries or they could just continue to buy products from authorised distributors who are well placed to manage the supply source on their behalf.
Concluding thoughts
Trust is implicit in the ongoing buyer / seller relationship within the electronic components supply network. It is therefore very important especially in this period of disruption that all parties communicate effectively both up and down their supply network and, in the process, strive hard to fi nd mutually agreeable alternative solutions to problems as they arise.
