he industrial sector was responsible for a quarter of global emissions in 2022, and manufacturers are racing against
the clock to meet net zero carbon goals, fuelling a fundamental shift in how factories are built. They are redesigning their factories with more automation and reduced energy usage. I recently had the chance to speak at the engineering annual event in Germany,
developments driving this evolution. Let’s take a closer look:
Next-generation connectivity As the number of connected devices on (AI) – a key theme this year – will consume more bandwidth and handle higher data volumes, putting pressure on networks. Bridging the physical and digital For factories of the future to be successful, machines must be able to securely sense, measure and interpret the real world. The conversion of analogue data, including pressure measurements or vibrations, to digital data, will play an increasing role here, to allow for more signal processing. In years to come, we will see manufacturers use more intelligent sensor at the asset level, improving visibility into factory performance, to remove asset life and reduce raw material usage. Convergence of OT and IT As information technology (IT) continues to meet operational technology interconnected factories emerge. Factory technology upgraded to increase bandwidth, improve time sensitivity and support wireless devices. For transparent network, where all devices, machines and
robots are connected and speak the same language will be needed.
For businesses to smoothly scale their IoT solutions, they should use time sensitive networking enabled networks to integrate various types of hardware and software without compatibility issues.
Manufacturing a smart green future
Implementing modular system design, localised decision making and ubiquitous intelligence at the edge, will be central to the future of industrial system efficient production environments for a more sustainable future. This will add more points of linkage between the physical and the digital, which will drive even more demand for analogue semiconductors.
Engineering an intelligent, connected automation environment where all equipment seamlessly collects and shares information is central to the industrial IoT vision. The challenge becomes interconnecting all the devices across the power and robust industrial connectivity technology to unlock this “intelligent Edge”.
