here seems to be a move by some employers to monitor their employees’ emotional state with software. The software’s makers claim that certain emotional states can impact employee productivity and, if identified and addressed, can save money for businesses.

We are intensively developing robots that mimic human behaviour, in some cases even adding a layer of emotions. In fact, that is the human pipe dream: to make robots think like people, behave like people, and even feel like people, to better fit into our societies and the workplace, and easily navigate and blend into the world of humans. Robots are being built to complement the qualities humans possess, some of which – such as emotions and creativity – still unique to us and considered by many to be powerful drivers. Yet, we now want to eradicate those emotions from humans and make them behave more like robots. Aren’t we blurring the lines a tad too much? I’d love to hear the conversation at someone’s workdesk between the (tick where applicable) angry-sad-excited- happy-elated employee and their supervisor: “Hey, you are not doing your job properly, you are far too cheerful!” Take it down a notch, will you?!” Or, in this age of wokeness, how would one approach an employee whose stressors stem from their home?

There’s too much “we can do it, so why not” attitude at some ‘solution’ providers, and the sad part is that someone, somewhere within a business might think it a good idea – good enough to spend a sizeable chunk of money on something like this.

Let’s leave emotions where they belong – with people – and let everything else fall into place. After all, we’ve gone this far with that bitter-sweet burden, so why change it now?!
