FEATURE Machine Vision

with a plug-and-play solution for the control cabinet interfaces, helps to avoid common errors, like cable wiring, during installation. A standard installation requires a high level of concentration as workers cut, strip and crimp cables. Using pre-moulded, fully- tested connector cables will significantly reduce the susceptibility to errors and shorten installation time. Diagnostics are another advantage of decentralised plug-and-play solutions. In the event of a fault, there is no need to individually check wire colours in a complex terminal box. And, if machine or plant downtimes occur due to delivery bottlenecks for spares, special parts or hand-made cables, the cost planning ends up completely out of expectation. A decentralised installation solution also has clear advantages for machine and system operation. As an example, let’s look at heat generation in the control cabinet. Power components, like power supplies, installed in the

cabinet cause losses during operation, which dissipate as heat. If poorly managed, this heat dissipation can lead to premature component ageing in the cabinet, as well as performance losses. With a decentralised installation solution, the power supply is mounted in the field. As a result, its heat does not build up in the control cabinet, leading to reduced cooling requirements, benefiting the service life of the components inside it.

Power at heart

Distance is another decisive factor in power supply performance and sensor/ actuator protection. The longer the cable run between the power supply and the end user, the greater the risk of voltage fluctuations. Murrelektronik’s decentralised Emparro67 switch-mode power supply is designed to supply power in the field while securing voltage on site at ambient temperatures of up to 85°C. Time-consuming and expensive

troubleshooting begins when an error occurs that results in a plant standstill. Has there been a power outage? Is there a broken sensor? Troubleshooting is easier in a decentralised installation environment. Thanks to LEDs and port- specific diagnostics on each module, the error is quickly found, significantly reducing machine and system downtimes.

Vision system fitting

All this is available for vision systems, like camera-based signal processing. If used, it can be assumed that large systems, or even entire production lines, are involved – like in goods logistics or in camera-controlled quality inspection of components on a production line. This is where decentralised installation concepts really come into their own – especially when it comes to retrofitting new or existing components. Often, these systems can’t be easily integrated into existing infrastructures. Camera systems require a lot more powerful data connections than classic sensor installations, and there must be sufficient component space in the control cabinet. No wonder, then, that many companies shy away from this planning and installation effort. These are precisely the situations

where vision installation solutions from Murrelektronik are very well suited to. The core components of a decentralised installation approach for industrial image processing are a smart system architecture consisting of robust and powerful connection technology and easy-to-install switches and power components for voltage provision and signal and data transmission.

Vision installation solutions, from left to right include the Murrelektronik Xelity Hybrid switch which handles data communication and power supply. The Injection Box is a four-way power and signal injector with 24V, the Master Breakout Box distributes power and signals and the NEC Class 2 Splitter is a pure power and signal distribution box
