Machine vision: Industry’s game-changer

utomation and optimisation enable greater efficiency, higher throughput, increased quality, fewer


reworks and improved customer satisfaction. But these are pushed a step further with machine vision, considered a game changer in many industries. Applications range from quality assurance in industrial production, to track and trace processes in logistics. Here, 2D and 3D cameras replace numerous sensors and are the foundation for maximising the automation of numerous processes. Barcode reading, recording of dimensions, monitoring of fill levels, parts tracking/identification and production-line monitoring are just some of the application fields.


Costs first


As end users seek greater modularity in automation equipment, a clear trend emerges – that of decentralised installation concepts. Components and functions are being moved from the control cabinet to the field. There will be far fewer cabinets in the future, and the ones that remain will be significantly smaller. This will also lead to a reduction in cabling and costs, and to faster fault detection. But, what makes decentralised installation architecture better and are there any associated challenges? First and foremost, there are the installation, warehousing, operation

All the field sensors, actuators and controllers are linked with cables but also require power supplies and batteries (for some sensors), which increases installation and maintenance costs. The expenses actually begin at system planning and design, and continue to rise through to the installation. Having an application- optimised, decentralised installation solution can lower the cost of installing a power supply by 30%. In addition, with a centralised


installation architecture, warehousing costs are higher since you have to keep different control cabinet feedthroughs, cable styles and lengths, and receptacles on hand. If there are different environmental requirements for machines and systems – which can be assumed in most cases – then the warehousing costs can increase exponentially.
