Automation under the spotlight at Southern Manufacturing 2022
S
outhern Manufacturing & Electronics makes its long-awaited return to Farnborough from February 8th to 10th 2022. The 20,000m²
Farnborough International Exhibition Centre in Hampshire will host a remarkably comprehensive exhibitor list covering the complete range of engineering activities, from high-tech machine tools and automation to components and subcontract services. Vendors from throughout the UK will be present, plus a surprisingly large number of international fi rms from Europe and beyond. After a tumultuous 20 months for the engineering and manufacturing sector, there is without doubt a great deal of enthusiasm for a return to face-to-face business. But even more so, a desire to re-evaluate and re- position enterprises that now fi nd themselves operating in a very diff erent environment to that of a pre-pandemic and pre-Brexit UK. Within this context, automation has taken on a particular importance and urgency, as rising energy costs, disrupted supply chains and a lack of skilled labour all represent serious challenges to be overcome.
Southern Manufacturing, with its very wide portfolio, is an ideal base from which to explore new ways of doing things. Design & Automation Solutions will be demonstrating an example of human-machine collaborative working on its stand at Southern 2022, using a MELFA ‘Assista’ Collaborative Robot, supplied by Mitsubishi Electric Automation Systems UK. Design & Automation Solutions is a factory automation consultancy and equipment vendor, off ering a complete service which includes robotics, bespoke machinery, systems integration & engineering support, solving problems across multiple platforms. Another specialist exhibiting this year is ICS Robotics, an independent Systems Integrator, with a wealth of knowledge that covers all makes of robots, including Panasonic, KUKA, ABB, Fanuc, Kawasaki and Yaskawa. reporting and analytics system, which improves throughput and reduces energy consumption, says the fi rm. Available on monthly subscription, the system ensures all machines are fully utilised and increased effi ciency usually means there is no need to buy new machines, says the company, as jobs can be moved around so that all deliveries are met. The system connects to any ERP and can improve overall equipment effi ciency and throughput, decrease downtime, increase profi t and reduce energy consumption. AS Controls is the sole UK representative for Spohn & Burkhardt controls, NBB radio remote controls, Sitec safety switches and Koduct Cable Chains. The fi rm supplies a wide variety of control system components, from joystick controllers to complete operator console units and control stations tailored to each individual requirement. Also available is a wide range of cable chain products, supplied fully assembled with all components including highly fl exible cables, guide channels & connectors, providing a ‘plug and play’ solution according to customers’ specifi cations.
RF Solutions will be displaying additions to its range of LoRa radio modules launched back in 2019 together with its latest HIRK modules, launched 2021. Showcasing the Lambda 62 RF module, an 868/915Mhz LoRa transceiver, a class leading, cost-eff ective radio module; featuring the Semtech SX1262 LoRa providing ultra-long range of 20KM+. Manufacturers exploring how automation and IoT can benefi t their businesses will also fi nd much to interest them at the show. Tim Scurlock of Applied Lean Consulting gives some ideas on how to drive continuous improvement in your business; Graham Cooper off ers tips on energy usage reduction in manufacturing and Nick Aitken and Dr Alex Martin give advice on how to handle a product safety incident. Sessions run over all three days and a full list is available on the show’s website at
