rocesses involved in the production of pharmaceutical products using drugs,


vitamins, minerals or herbs have the potential to generate dust that can be harmful to the health of employees. All businesses – and public sector


organisations – owe a duty of care in law to their people to assess the health risks associated with airborne contaminants involved in manufacturing and finishing processes, and to take action to maintain a dust-free environment. Employers will need to meet tightly mandated Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations in line with workplace exposure limits (WELs), which are presented as time weighted averages. The production of pharmaceutical


products has the potential to expose employees to airborne contaminants through a number of processes, including: • Powder weighing and handling • Chemical control • Tablet pressing and coating • Fluid bed drying • Spray drying, blending and granulation • General room ventilation

easily pass into the alveolar lung region, and because they have the potential to carry complex chemicals, can trigger adverse reactions in the body. In addition, while particles of less than 0.5 microns will mostly be exhaled, if soluble they can diffuse into the blood stream.”

DEALING WITH THE RISKS Pharmaceutical sector workers are at risk of being exposed to active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) in the products being manufactured. APIs are designed to deliver biological change in humans, so any inhalation or absorption can result in negative health consequences for technicians. Industry studies have shown respiratory


sensitisation resulting from exposure to several compounds, notably antibiotics and chemical therapeutic agents, along with evidence of bronchoconstriction related to exposure to opiates. Dust


‘WASH’ AWAY SENSOR RELIABILITY WORRIES

operational, it must be thoroughly inspected and tested at least once every 14 months, with a suitable record kept of the examination and tests for at least 5 years.”
