oday’s transportation industry is innovating like never before thanks to
savings, through to meeting eco or ‘green’ policies, there is an ever-increased scrutiny on transportation regulation. This has led to an evolution of automation, and the development of technology to monitor and optimise the use of cars, public transport, industrial and agricultural vehicles, and all other forms of transportation. One area of technology, which has made significant strides within the transportation sector, is the Internet of Things (IoT). Integrated sensors – often combined with GPS tracking – built into different areas of transportation have unleashed capabilities in terms of route optimisation, schedule management, and performancemonitoring, to name a few. But what are the benefits of telematics and smart technology like this?
Improving health and safety measures One benefit of telematics in transportation is the improvement health and safety measures. In Great Britain, for example, every year in the workplace there are more than 5,000 accidents involving transport – 50 of which involved fatalities. On the roads, there are tens of thousands more. In addition to undertaking due diligence measures such as keeping pedestrians and vehicles apart, providing clear signage and a well-lit working environment, and keeping traffic routes free from obstructions, using technology to support health and safety protocols has become a ‘must have’.
