Revolutionising medical device design: the role of
advanced thermal solutions Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are increasingly seeking out sophisticated thermal solutions to improve the performance of medical devices. With over 2 million different medical devices across the global market, according to WHO, the design of these critical devices must be perfect. In this article, Andy Selvy, chief systems designer at industrial heating technology manufacturer Watlow, delves into the transition from traditional heaters to advanced, layered heater technologies in medical device design.
The critical role of thermal management in medical devices
Thermal management within medical devices, clinical diagnostics instruments and analytical instruments involves the sophisticated control of temperatures to prevent overheating and ensure devices operate within their optimal performance range. Proper thermal regulation is vital because even the slightest of deviations can lead to device failure, diminished treatment effectiveness, or serious risks to user safety.

his month, we celebrated World Engineering Day on 4th
March, an
annual commemorative day proclaimed by UNESCO to recognise the contributions of engineers and engineering to society, appreciating their role in driving innovation. The theme this year was “unleashing the power of engineers to advance the Sustainable Development Goals” and was celebrated at the UNSECO headquarters in Paris. This day, along with the events marking it, helps to promote engineering as a career to the younger community, something that we can all agree is increasingly important in this technological age.

Rohde & Schwarz announces
Demystifying EMC UK 2025 Demystifying EMC, hosted by Rohde & Schwarz, returns to the Silverstone conference venue in Northamptonshire, UK for 2025. This year, the popular event focused on electromagnetic compatibility, covering aspects including legislation, test techniques and design knowledge, takes place on Wednesday 2nd April 2025. Lee Hill of Silent Solutions will start the day looking at a troubleshooting project to make a coffee machine produce less radiated emissions and create a better user experience in an interactive session titled: Would You Like Some EMI With Your Coffee?
The day will continue with three separate streams that allows choosing from a wide range of subjects. Stream one will begin with a description of how to design for EMC using common laboratory equipment, co-presented by Rohde & Schwarz and Würth Electronics UK. Three further sessions will describe automotive testing and whole vehicles with Luke Turnbull and Mason Sheppard of Applus 3C Test; EMI receiver test instrument with Rohde & Schwarz; and best practices for grounding and shielding with Min Zhang of Mach 1 Design.
