Schaeffler has acquired Belgian startup Aerosint SA from Desktop Metal, a leading U.S. manufacturer of innovative 3D printing systems. The startup will be renamed ‘Schaeffler Aerosint SA’. Andreas Schick, chief operating officer at

ADVANCING MEDICAL DEVICE MANUFACTURING


Smiths Interconnect has launched a new high-density option to its established D series of connectors, aimed at the medical market.


These connectors are imperative in meeting the needs of medical critical


applications such as Cardiac mapping of arrhythmias, Intracardiac echocardiogram (ICE), intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), general imaging (MRI) and endoscopy applications. The new D04 connectors offer a high density contact count, up


to 82 contacts on the standard configuration and up to 10,000 mating cycles. They utilise Smiths Interconnect’s superior performing hyperboloid contact technology, Hypertac, ensuring safety and reliability in most environments. This offers insulation resistance greater than 5000 MOhm at 500 VDC and meets the electrical requirements of EIA-364-05 to 70 test procedures. proof push-button quick disconnect and finger proofing isolation. They are easy to assemble due to the distinctive D shape layout which significantly reduces capacity for incorrect mating. CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE TO DEVELOP MATERIALS FOR SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS


Essentra has created a new Centre of Excellence at its manufacturing and distribution site and UK headquarters in Kidlington to test and develop new materials that will, in turn, enable it to offer even more sustainable product ranges globally for its customers. Testing will be conducted on both recycled content and various


biodegradable and bio-based materials including bio-woods, nylon and Polylactic Acids (PLA) to see how they perform when replacing or added to existing resins used in the manufacture of plastic components. These innovative new materials can reduce the environmental and carbon impact of the products Essentra manufactures, and help its customers reduce their own carbon footprint. Jennifer Spence, head of sustainability strategy at Essentra, said: “We get


many requests from customers around the sustainability aspects of our products. The Centre of Excellence will support us in providing that data, including embedded emissions, recyclability, and how a material performs at the end of its life – for example whether the product can be re-used, and whether the materials are widely recyclable or biodegradable.”
