The skills shortage in UK manufacturing has been in the news for a number of years now, with many highly skilled engineers nearing retirement age and companies struggling to find – and retain – skilled labour to fill the gaps. Companies are having difficulty attracting young talent, but in line with that are finding that, once they enter the workforce, they tend to switch jobs more frequently.
Apprenticeships have therefore grown in importance in the
manufacturing sector. A great way to launch a career, these enable individuals – from school leavers to those wanting to upskill – to gain structured hands-on training and qualifications, sometimes to degree level. And they’re paid to do it.
However, according to the In-Comm Training Annual Barometer, there has been a 9% drop

in the number of individuals considering an apprenticeship. This is despite the fact that recent reports are estimating that around 16% of people aged 16-24 are unable to find work. So something has gone drastically wrong.

One interesting technology that has gained rapid uptake in the industrial marketplace is the use
of 3D printing. Capable of producing a huge range of parts, this is being adopted across industries ranging from automotive to defence. According to Chris Fulton, managing director of SYS Systems, 3D printing has become: “The machine tool you didn’t think you needed and the one that is the most profitable on your shopfloor.” Find out more on page 43.
Rapid Fusion is another company that has seen growing demand for its additive manufacturing solutions. The company has recently launched Cerberus, a hybrid manufacturing system that can be used in isolated areas – from arctic oil platforms to disaster zones. Read more on page 42.
