This year’s series of exhibitions got off to a great start, with Southern Manufacturing & Electronics taking place at the Farnborough International Exhibition Centre earlier this month. I always find this to be a great show, with a huge

variety of products and technologies on show. And, wandering around, it was lovely to see so many friendly faces from familiar companies including igus, Permabond, CamdenBoss, IKO Nippon Thomson, Hammond Manufacturing, and many more! While we don’t have any exhibition previews this month (we have two coming up in March), there is a huge range of fascinating content for you in this issue. For a start, we examine how to assess risks in machinery; and look at a fascinating application story in which mechanical components and automation have enabled a kinetic sculpture to move with such smooth motion it gives visitors to London’s Science Museum the impression that it is breathing! We also find out why additive manufacturing is being seen as the first-choice production method for design engineers; and how sensor technology can create an intelligent industrial ecosystem. With our Industry Focus this month being the Military, Aerospace & Defence sector, I have included a range of stories throughout the issue covering this interesting industry. From specifying motors for use in the aerospace sector, to why precision timing is at the heart of defence Open Architecture Systems; and from how magnetic gears provide improved efficiency for aerospace manufacturers, to why Airbus selected Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE applications when developing its A350 XWB wide body aircraft –it’s all included in this issue.
