ased in the Netherlands, AVK Plastics is a manufacturer of synthetic surface boxes and pallets. The company, however,


was experiencing problems with the actuator used in an automatic screwdriving application. A central part of the system, the actuator is responsible for moving an automatic screwdriver horizontally in order to fix three screws (spaced 300mm apart) into a pallet. However, the actuator being used was unable


to provide the high stability required for this application, and a new solution was needed that could provide not only the stability but also accuracy and repeatability. According to the company, precision and repeatability are key here as the screwdriver needs to be precisely aligned in order to fasten the screws into the screw holes. After 14 months the actuator broke down, so the company turned to HepcoMotion.


   Tomeet the application demands, AVK Plastics selected HepcoMotion’s SBD belt driven actuator. Based on ballrail technology, SBD carriages are pre-loaded to eliminate play and deliver high rigidity for precision applications such as this. As AVK Plastics experienced with the previous system, any movement in the carriage plate affects the accuracy of the screwdriver, making the process obsolete. So, the resistance to movement provided by Hepco’s SBD was therefore of the utmost importance for the company. SBD is a zero backlash system, ensuring


excellent positional accuracy and repeatability – fundamental requirements for this application,

providing a higher level of performance in terms of load capacity and life than other comparable


sized actuators, the company explains. The frame is constructed using Hepco’s MCS aluminium profiles, and the SBD is powered by a servo motor and energy chain. The system has been in use trouble-free for


over ten months, with the only maintenance being to periodically spray grease into the re-circulation block. The HepcoMotion solution is also providing the stability and accuracy necessary for this application.

                                                                                                             The project has seen 51 new signalling rooms


created, as well as equipment to house signalling cabinets along the 161km of track, with Roxtec UK’s products sealing cables going into and out of these buildings and cabinets. The seals serve as a fire barrier, with 60 minutes of insulation and integrity guaranteed, as well as water ingress protection in the event of a flood and rodent protection. In addition, they protect against other hazards such as the effects of lightning strikes, gas, dust, humidity, electro-magnetic disturbances and the risk of explosion. “Roxtec cable and pipe sealing systems were chosen due to their exceptional life expectancy


and ease of use,” said David Chalmers, divisional manager, Infrastructure and Industry, Roxtec UK & Ireland. “Each station’s signal equipment room or removable electrical building is individually designed and 12 variants of Roxtec’s rectangular and round frames were chosen to cover all station requirements.”


 
