water-cooLed induction motors unveiLed products drives, controLs & motors

A new range of stainless steel, water-cooled (WD), induction motors has been unveiled by Germany- based Ben Buchele Elektromotorenwerke. The range meets international standard class IE3 (S1), which covers both efficiency and duty cycle. Available globally in 0.75 to 300kW capacity,

these three-phase (or asynchronous) motors are suited to applications where high performance is a requirement, but noise and heat must be kept to a minimum, such as in small spaces. These are being offered as

an alternative to air-cooled motors, the company explains. The electric current in the rotor is supplied by three separate phases, producing torque by electromagnetic induction. The range starts with the

WD71 model and goes up to the WD315. WD is a reference to ‘water-cooled’, while the numbers represent the motors’ frame size. The dimensions of the products vary as the motors increase in frame size in 13 total increments, also including 80, 90, 100, 112, 132, 160, 180, 200, 225, 250, and 280. The range can be used in the most challenging

conditions, such as those where seawater, salty air, and ambient temperatures of up to +60˚C are present. They are manufactured with high-quality,

application-sensitive seals and sealants, with the company able to achieve protection levels according to IP56, 66, or 67, depending on the motor, without compromising performance. While the range –WD71 to WD315 – is standard

based on frame size and capacity, each unit is prepared according to individual specifications. The range will be sold to both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end users, with test facilities, printing devices, textile machines, injection machines, maritime hybrid engines, and anchor/ mooring winches, among target applications. They can be supplied coated or painted in white, which is likely to be the chosen option for those utilising them in food production environments.

Detlef Koslowsky, head of sales at Ben Buchele,

said: “As opposed to air-cooled motors, water- cooled motors do not cause swirling of dust or dirt, making them the ideal solution for hygienically critical areas. The S1 duty cycle means that the motor runs continuously, which is important for these types of application.”

Schneider Electric’s Altivar variable speed drives are designed to reduce the energy consumption of motor applications and increase energy efficiency in industrial operations by allowing motors to operate at the ideal speed for every load condition. According to the company,

the VSDs can generate up to a 30% reduction in energy consumption in industrial processes. It has been estimated that over 140

million tons of CO2 emissions could be saved or avoided during the service life of the drives sold by Schneider Electric during the 2018-2021 period alone. Highlighting this, the drives have recently

won the Most Climate-positive Carbon Handprint Product Award at Climate Week NYC 2022. The awards recognise products that produce major positive climate impact and help economies significantly reduce emissions or increase carbon sinks.

high performance winch drives suit marine industry use

Available in five sizes from 25,000 to 160,000Nm, Bonfiglioli’s new high performance 800 series winch drive has marine-resistant paint, making it suitable for blast cleaning. According to the company, easy and fast assembly of the 800 series

gearboxes into the winch drum is a key feature of their design. In addition, thanks to easy access to the brake, ready made brake replacement kits, as well as easy access to oil filling, draining plugs, and oil level pipe/indicator, maintenance is simple. A certified modular architecture

means the new 800 winch drive series is extremely flexible, while additional standard stages widen the available range of torque and speed. A broad spectrum of motor flanges allows the combination with preferred electric as well as hydraulic motors and right-angle stages, allow space saving winch designs. All Bonfiglioli drives are

designed to meet high performance requirements under the special conditions at sea with a torque range from 1.000 to 3.000.000Nm. The drives have been approved in accordance with the standards set by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). Certificates from Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd (DNV GL), and the China Classification Society (CCS), are also available.
