Machines and production facilities must be safe in accordance with applicable ‘local’ laws and manufacturers cannot sell a machine in the UK or Europe until it has passed the conformity assessment process and received the appropriate marking. Mark Staples from EUCHNER (UK) explains EnginEEring
achines in the UK must comply with the safety requirements of the ‘Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008’. In
addition to this, UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) product marking came into effect on 1st January 2021 and applies to the same goods being placed on the market in Great Britain. The original deadline for UKCA marking conformity was 1st January 2022. However, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, to allow businesses time to adjust to the new requirements, CE marking will remain in place until 1st January 2023 in most cases. An authorised UKCA representative like
EUCHNER should be able to partner you across all aspects of machinery safety and provide support from the early engineering phases, accompanying machine designers at every step to ensure UKCA marking for a machine is obtained. In fact, the earlier they are involved in the process, the more designers will benefit; and considering safety engineering aspects during the development phase can significantly reduce workload as projects progress and ensures the safest possible machine design from the outset. By adopting a single-source approach to UKCA
marking and receiving all your marking-related services from an authorised representative, you can save time and money as they will assume responsibility for issuing the conformity declaration on your behalf; and do this by
understanding your specific requirements and supporting you throughout all phases of the process or at defined stages. The UKCA conformity marking process
comprises of many individual stages, each requiring the well-founded understanding of applicable regulations and the extensive experience in dealing with machines and installations that safety experts can offer. Independent, experienced experts should help you navigate complex rules and regulations and support and guide you throughout the declaration of conformity process until UKCA marking is obtained for your machines. The defined stages for Self-Certifiable machines under UKCA marking are:
riSK ASSESSMEnt A properly undertaken risk assessment according to EN ISO 12100 fully documents the risks and the required Performance Level. UKCA representatives should first determine the harmonised standards and legal foundation applicable to the machine concerned, and then define the machine functions and identify and assess potential danger zones in the risk analysis and risk assessment.
SAfEty ConCEpt
Following the risk assessment, they should then design identified machines to be safe and develop a detailed machinery safety concept by suggesting risk reduction measures.
VErifiCAtion
With the safety concept as a basis, it must be verified whether the safety functions planned for the machine achieve the required safety level. Here for example, SISTEMA software can quickly and reliably determine whether the planned safety measures comply with the requirements of the BS EN ISO 13849-1 standard.

You safety expert should then support you by implementing any measures identified from the safety concept.
VAlidAtion
Validation is a decisive step in the conformity assessment process and is used to check whether the fully-equipped machine is safe and fulfils the specifications of the applicable Regulation or Directive. This final check ends with verification that your machine complies with all safety regulations and requirement of the BS EN ISO 13849-2 standard.

Once the process is complete, your UKCA representative can be authorised to issue the conformity declaration on your behalf or provide a written recommendation for issuing the conformity declaration. Once these stages and the conformity
declaration process are complete, machines may be provided with UKCA Marking and sold within Great Britain. With the UKCA Marking in place, you as the machine manufacturer declare conformity with the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations and accept responsibility for your product meeting the legal requirements. This documentation should be kept in the Technical Construction File by the manufacturer/authorised representative for a period of 10 years for inspection by market surveillance if required.

Once the Conformity assessment process has been completed, by self-certification of Third part assessment, the UKCA mark can be affixed to your equipment or machinery and all supporting documentation.
