Customising enClosures for speCifiC appliCations
If you have considered the application requirements and realised that a standard enclosure doesn’t meet the application demands, enclosure customisation offers the ideal solution. Mandy Thompson, sales manager at BCL Enclosures, explains

lthough there is a very wide choice of enclosures on the market in different designs, sizes, materials and colours,
some applications require a non-standard solution to ensure the correct functioning of the interior electrical and electronic controls, or to enable control mechanisms to connect to other design elements or enable accessibility to controls for human interface and inputs. Enclosure specification should therefore
ideally be thought about early on in the design process, so possible enclosures can be considered and samples obtained. There are a number of points to consider.
Price per unit should not be the only deciding factor. Suitability for the application is paramount, as is reliability of supply, plus aesthetic appearance that enhances the value of the end product and/or blends seamlessly with the environment in which the application is to used. Sometimes, however, it is clear early on that nothing standard on the market fits the application and a custom solution is necessary.
a Customised design
Customisation of its very wide range of ABS enclosure ranges is offered by British manufacturer BCL Enclosures, which has many long-standing customers for this aspect of its services. Applications and the degree of customisation required are very varied. Virtually all of BCL’s enclosures can be punched and drilled: designs can be discussed with product experts, samples produced and quotations given, all within customers’ desired and sometimes short timescales. Let’s take a brief look at just a few examples: Custom AB Enclosure: This is a customised
AB910W enclosure from the AB range of ABS boxes in matt finish, with lids. Internally there are integral stand offs in both halves of each box and PCB slots. This customer requires a

housing for a motor and cooling fan for its remote-control curtains and blinds. The AB910W has been customised with a square aperture to accommodate the power supply socket and, in addition, a grid of holes has been drilled for ventilation to the cooling fan. These units have been supplied to the customer for the past fifteen years. Customised T2 enclosure: This T2 enclosure
is customised to house a PCB and power socket for PAT testing equipment. BCL has been supplying these in both black and white versions direct to a customer for over ten years. The company also works with contract manufacturers and box builders. Customised Potting Box: A custom GPL2
from the GPL range of potting boxes is used for housing electronic components in a vehicle speaker housing. The unit is customised with a hole in the lug to secure it to the inside of the speaker housing and a hole in one end for the cable entry. The contract manufacturer then uses a potting agent to seal the components into the potting box. Customised Multi-purpose enclosure: From
the MB range of multi-purpose boxes with PCB slots which are available in black, white and light grey in matt or polished finish (depending on model). This is another custom design for a contract manufacturer. Model MB2W is supplied customised with two different size holes for wiring the unit. Both accommodate two cable glands to the customer’s specification. BCL has been supplying these for approximately 12 years.
