HYDRAULIC AXLE GUIDE ELEMENT

In collaboration with Bombardier, Trelleborg’s antivibration solutions operation has developed an hydraulic axle guide element which enables Bombardier trains to better adapt to their immediate environment. The BOMBARDIER FLEXX curve

hydraulic axle guide element, which enlarges Trelleborg’s HALL range, features frequency-depending longitudinal stiffness and delivers benefits including reduced wheel and track wear, energy consumption and curve squeal noise. These characteristics result in cost savings for end users, with less energy, maintenance and repair needed. FLEXX curve can be loaded with

high vertical loads, complementing BOMBARDIER FLEXX compact bogies. Also available as a ready-to-install solution, it can be installed in all past and upcoming FLEXX compact bogies.

BOMBARDIER TO 3D PRINT INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR TRAIN PARTS

AStratasys F900 3D Printer is being installed at Bombardier Transportation’s largest manufacturing site in Hennigsdorf, Germany, where it will be used to 3D print interior and exterior train parts such as air ducts, housings and cable holders. Bombardier will also 3D print customised rail tools to aid the production process and speed up the launch of new platforms. According to the company, the 3D printer will be deployed to accelerate and customise rail part

production, reduce inventory for spare parts and increase production flexibility for parts and tools. The F900 3D Printer features a large build tray, leveraging the properties of ULTEM 9085 resin

material. Its high strength-to-weight ratio and flame-smoke-toxicity rating make it ideal for production applications and a popular choice among customers within the transport industry for achieving compliance to the Rail Standard EN45545-2. The 3D printed rail parts produced by Bombardier Transportation will primarily support the specific

production demands of German, Swiss and Austrian rail and tram companies – strengthening the company’s ability to maintain, produce and replace train and tram parts quickly and cost-effectively. Andreas Langfeld, president EMEA Stratasys, said: “Bombardier Transportation’s investment in our

F900 3D Printer is synonymous with the huge interest we’re seeing in the mobility sector for industrial- grade 3D printing solutions that can enhance and, in many cases, replace traditional manufacturing across a variety of interior and exterior rail applications.”

RAIL INDUSTRY MODULAR POWER CONNECTORS RANGE ENHANCED

MPC rail industry modular power connectors from Stäubli Electrical Connectors have been upgraded to include new generations of straight- and right-angled connectors. The insulators in the new ranges are made from

improved plastics that provide increased insulation resistance of up to 15kV and a lower degree of flammability. They meet the European rail applications standard EN 45545-2, including the most stringent HL3 R23 hazard level class for underground and high speed trains. As well as being more compact with weight reductions of up to 30% over previous models, these offer ratings of 3600V and up to 700A, and can be

used for connecting transformers, traction motors, inverters and batteries, as well as power links between carriages. The MPC is vibration and shock tested in accordance

and cable cross-sections from 10 to 240 mm2

with EN 613731 and is corrosion resistant. It is rated at IP69K when mated and provides over 500 mating cycles. A range of compatible insulators is available for various contact diameters, are accepted. Two screw

connections with M8 or M10 thread are now available, depending on the size, so that a grounding cable can be connected.

Stäubli Electrical Connectors COMPLETE SOLUTIONS FOR RAIL APPLICATIONS

The HARTING Technology Group has commissioned a new inspection robot for inter-car connection systems, a step which enables it to offer its railway customers a complete solution package. Now, the HARTING Quality and Technology Centre (HQT) will be able to test inter-car cables under realistic operating conditions, simulating the entire lifecycle in accordance with the route profile, allowing the load of the so-called ‘jumper cable’ to be adjusted and documented. A wide range of products for

use in the rail industry are available from the company, including the compact Han 1A connector series, which enables high-performance connections for small to medium- sized electrical assemblies in rail vehicles as well as reliable, fast Ethernet. The portfolio offers a broad range of solutions, from IP20 connectors for the control cabinet, through to protection class IP65 and contact inserts for interference-proof data transmission (shielding). The system is modular as it uses eight different

contact inserts (each in versions for pin and socket), which are used for transmitting data, signals or power. In addition, there are plastic housings, locking mechanisms, mounting frames, cable adapters and strain reliefs, which are equipped with different coloured elements for error-free coding. The Han 1A is particularly suitable for

supplying power to door drives and entry systems. Adapters and contact inserts for M12, D-coded, and M12 X-coded, are also available to ensure trouble-free data transmission in rail vehicles. M12 D-coded enables shielded data transmission to Cat. 5, while M12 X- coded enables transmission to Cat. 6A. Due to its modularity and the large

variety of inserts, it is suitable wherever small drives, sensors and devices are

required. In traffic engineering, this could be feeding door drives and entry systems, lighting, headlights, loudspeakers, screens, scoreboards, warning and alarm lights, push buttons, wipers or beepers.

BONDING AND SEALING SOLUTIONS

Henkel’s LOCTITE, TEROSON and BONDERITE brands are being used for a wide range of applications in train design, build, operation, repair and remanufacture. The LOCTITE thread locking

adhesives are now more effective on passive substrates such as stainless steel and their greater oil tolerance makes them less sensitive to improperly cleaned parts. In addition, new LOCTITE sealants provide higher strength on contaminated surfaces. The company recently demonstrated

the effectiveness of its structural bonding technologies by using 3g of hybrid adhesive to bond an assembly that pulled 208 tons of freight train wagons along a test track.
