A new high performance clutch that reduces CO2 emissions has been developed by KEB Automation.

According to the company, a key to reducing

fuel consumption in vehicles lies in the deactivation of a compressor. So, this is where KEB has focussed its efforts, by developing an electromagnetic friction clutch which is installed directly on the compressor. The clutch transmits a static torque of at least 50Nm at a power of 35 watts and a rated current of 2.9A, achieving an operating speed of up to 20,000 revolutions per minute. With a maximum switchable differential speed of 11,000 revolutions, maximum slip times of 1,500ms and a friction speed of up to 75m/s, the electromagnetic clutch is characterised by its extremely high performance.

friction clutch reduces vehicle co2 emissions After testing various types of connection

to the compressor shaft, the company selected a non-rotating, deviation-neutral clamping hub. There are two friction linings in the rotor – the outer lining is used to transmit torque, the inner lining is used to adjust the working air gap during final assembly of the clutch unit. The preset working air gap is maintained until the vehicle is put into operation. Thorsten Nolte, sales engineer brakes

& clutches at KEB Automation, commented: “Each clutch unit has successfully completed an entire run-in cycle and is ready for immediate use on the engine. We are pleased to be able to offer vehicle construction real added value in

Torsionally rigid flange couplings

angular misalignments, while high torsional stiffness helps them effectively suppress coupling-induced resonances. According to the company, a typical

installation for the couplings is between a diesel engine and a hydraulic pump. The coupling allows a pass-fitting connection between the engine flywheel and pump shaft, with the pump centred via an SAE housing. Radial tensioning guarantees a backlash-free fit on the pump shaft. Dentex FL couplings are suitable

Dentex FL series flange couplings are available from R+L Hydraulics to connect engines to pumps and other industrial applications. Designed with industry-standard SAE

mounting dimensions, their assembly uses a polyamide flange with reinforced threaded bores and a steel hub. Not only are these said to offer excellent electrical insulating properties and high thermal stability, but they are maintenance-free and easy to mount in limited spaces. The couplings also compensate for both longitudinal and

for both horizontal and vertical shaft connections. Quick and easy to mount, their narrow design makes them ideal for tight spaces. The glass-fibre reinforced polyamide flange withstands temperatures up to +120˚C and resists all market-standard lubricants and hydraulic fluids. Requiring no lubrication, the steel-plastic combination makes the couplings maintenance free. Dentex FL series flange couplings are

available in various hub designs, with bore or splining from 20mm to 80mm and flanges from SAE 6.5 to SAE 11.5. Special sizes are also available.

beam couplings for robotics

For robotic applications, Ruland’s (www.ruland.com) beam couplings are machined from a single piece of aluminium or stainless steel, with several spiral cuts for higher torsional stiffness and torque capabilities than single beam couplings. As a result of the multiple-beam pattern, these can accommodate higher amounts of parallel misalignment, while also allowing for high angular misalignment and axial motion. Medical and surgical robots often combine a stepper or servo

motor to a lead screw or encoder, requiring a zero-backlash coupling for precise motion control. These systems have limited torque requirements, however they may need high responsiveness and flexibility, making a beam coupling a suitable choice. Ruland’s four-beam style couplings (P- and MW-series) have a more compact design that is paired best with light-duty applications such as servo motor to encoder connections. The six-beam style coupling (F-series) has increased torque capacity and is well suited to light-duty power transmission applications such as connecting a motor to a lead screw. The multiple-beam couplings

are manufactured with a balanced design for reduced vibration at speeds up to 6,000rpm. Clamp-style F-series couplings are supplied with Ruland’s proprietary Nypatch anti-vibration coating. The beam couplings are offered in clamp and set screw styles with inch, metric, and inch to metric bore combinations ranging from 3mm (3/32 inch) to 20mm (¾ inch).

disc coupling refurbishment

Located on the Norfolk coast, the Bacton Gas Terminal supplies up to a third of the UK’s total gas demand, whilst also exporting gas to Europe. Ensuring reliability at such sites is essential for supporting the UK’s energy needs, and it is recommended that plant operators hold

critical spares, such as power transmission products. Installed between a gas turbine and a high-speed

compressor, the Bibby Turboflex (a brand of Altra Industrial Motion Corp) high performance 305S Torquemeter disc coupling operated at peak performance for more than 20 years. With a torque rating up to 100kNm and a max speed of 7700rpm, this coupling features an integrated torque meter that measures asset efficiency, ensuring maximum gas output. Due to its operating life, plant operators decided to install the site’s spare coupling and return the original operational coupling back to Bibby for a health check and refurbishment. Within two weeks, the coupling was

disassembled and removed from the bearing casing. All components were cleaned, de-greased and checked, with major components then shot blasted. Utilising a CMM, the critical dimensions of all parts were checked against the original coupling drawings. A thorough magnetic particle inspection (MPI) was then performed and a written detailed inspection report sent to the customer. The complete overhaul returned the coupling

to its original production condition, and it was delivered to the customer with a 1-year warranty.
