IO-LINK SENSORS FOR INDUSTRY 4.0 SYSTEMS
A new range of IO-Link equipped sensors for deployment in Industry 4.0 systems have been manufactured by Euroswitch. These are now available from PVL, a distributor of
industrial automation, switches and sensors. The sensor range includes:
• The Differential Pressure Transmitter piston operated, 2-10 bar pressure range, with IO- Link and two PNP contacts.
• The ESL level/temperature sensor with 4-20 mA signal output. Specifically designed to monitor the level of a fluid, this features two settable PNP or NPN thresholds for either level or temperature.
• EST Temperature Sensor with standard operating temperature of -20 to +100˚C (others on request), 4-20 mA signal output, two digital PNP/NPN. IO-Link communication offers many
advantages, such as the possibility of using a standard unshielded 3-wire cable, advanced diagnostics and increased data availability, remote configuration and monitoring, and simplified device replacement. These are advantages that translate into an improvement in machine management and an increase in process efficiency, with the resulting reduction in overall costs.

SICK’S FILL LEVEL MONITORING KEEPS PACKAGING MACHINES TOPPED UP
A digital service that gives instant visibility to filling levels in packagingmachinery has been developed by SICK in collaboration with industry end-users. SICK Filling Level Monitoring gives real- time data via smartwatch or phone, so that levels of carton blanks, adhesive or film wraps, for example, stay topped up. Machine operators can monitor fill levels and are alerted by SICK’s Filling Level Monitoring system before levels become critical.
The SICK Filling LevelMonitoring digital service can be used with any SICK smart level sensors. Its
first applications have been developed with packagingmanufacturers andmachine builders using SICK DT-50 laser distance sensors to output levelmeasurements fromcartonmagazines and filmrolls. The measurements are routed to a SICK SIM1012 edge gateway, which aggregates and forwards encrypted data via SICK’s LiveConnect digital interface, so that it can be accessed, managed and processed online. The SICK Filling Level Monitoring cloud-based dashboard provides easy-to-interpret graphical
information about the real-time status of machines from any internet-enabled device. Automatic push notifications on the fill levels can be set up for smart devices to alert with an acoustic signal and vibration. Analysis of historic trends can be used to optimise production processes. While initially developed for cardboard and film packaging materials, Filling Level Monitoring
can also be adapted for liquids including adhesives, or granular raw materials. It is also possible to add customised services and analyses tailored to machinery or processes. Up to six SICK sensors can be monitored by each SICK SIM1012 gateway, and more sensors,
including third-party devices, may be added by connecting over OPC-UA. Sensors are also continuously monitored by the system in case one should go offline or need a replacement. This can be extended on request, for example to customise and display additional data on the
dashboard; and integration to third party ERP and MES software systems is possible. SICK

AMD has announced the Ryzen Embedded R2000 Series, second-generationmid-range system-on- chip (SoC) processors, optimised for a wide range of industrial and robotics systems, machine vision, IoT and thin-client equipment. The new R2514 model is said to exhibit up
to 81% higher CPU and graphics performance than the comparable R1000 series processor. Performance-per-watt efficiency is also optimised using ‘Zen+’ core architecture with AMD Radeon graphics for rich and versatile multimedia capabilities. Ryzen Embedded R2000 processors can power up to four independent displays in brilliant 4K resolution. Embedded R2000 Series processors are
scalable up to four ‘Zen+’ CPU cores with eight threads, 2MB of L2 cache and 4MB of shared L3 cache. This gives embedded systemdesigners great flexibility to scale performance and power efficiencies with a single processing platform. With support for up to 3200 MT/s DDR4 dual-
channelmemory and expanded I/O connectivity, the Ryzen Embedded R2000 Series processors deliver 33% higher memory bandwidth and up to 2X greater I/O connectivity compared to R1000 series processors, the company states.
A PLUG-AND-PLAY SOLUTION FOR SIMPLE AND SECURE CLOUD CONNECTIVITY
At a recent press conference, SolutionsPT launched its plug-and-play Plant Portal, a solution that removes the complexity of cloud computing while enabling secure connectivity to even hard-to-reach assets. This, the company explains, is a new solution for UK industrial enterprises seeking to gain the benefits of Digital Transformation technologies. Plant Portal can be tailored tomeet the needs of a variety of applications, and assembled on site. According to the company, including hardware and
software fromthe SolutionsPT portfolio into a single purchase order reduces the complexity, cost and time it takes to connect OT environments to cloud-based software, allowing data to be accessed and analysed in real time, fromanywhere, via a simple web interface. There are two options available. Plant Portal Solo is suitable for connecting remote assets;
while Plant Portal Connect can bridge the IT and OT divide of an air-gapped security approach. Benefitting from encrypted outbound-only connection to the cloud via either a 4G router or a
corporate network, Plant Portal Solomakes it easy to bring data fromdisparate and remote assets to the cloud, opening the door to the benefits of data-enabled operations control andmanagement to all. Plant Portal Solo connects remote and stranded assets that are frequently not connected to the
network or internet enabled due to the complexity of the IT operation required to configure a tiered network. The Solo offering is a configuration solution bundle which supports a ‘plug and play’ approach with in-built industrial grade security and over 250 communications drivers, removing the risk and time investment required to connect remote assets using traditional IT methods. Plant Portal Connect safely bridges the IT and OT divide (air-gapping) which many industrial
enterprises have in place to reduce cybersecurity risk. Isolated OT automation networks can be connected to the enterprise-level IT with the simple addition of the Plant Portal Connect solution, providing immediate connectivity and security and enabling a single digital thread from the plant floor to the enterprise and cloud. Kyle Lion, pre-sales engineer, SolutionsPT, said: “Plant Portal represents a culmination of
digital transform and specific cybersecurity expertise with world-class solutions that will allow every industrial enterprise to successfully harness the benefits of enterprise-wide visibility and analysis. Plant Portal removes the complexity of cloud computing while overcoming all the environmental and time investment challenges of stranded assets without risk of cyber-attack.”
