or over 40 years, HEGLA has been building high performance, high quality, machinery and systems for processing
flat glass. Despite offering a range of standard machinery, today many of its customers require a more specific bespoke solution and, to do this, efficiency is essential. Dr Markus Schoisswohl, CEO at HEGLA
New Technology, explained: “As a machine manufacturer we are driven by our daily business. We have every machine in our catalogue, but it’s rare that a standard machine is sold. Today, in order to be a powerful, sustainable, partner to the European glass industry, HEGLA needs to be able to produce batch size 1 very efficiently.” So when looking to the future and examining
customer requirements, the company realised that digitalisation was key, and that new processes for structuring glass surfaces would be necessary. So in order to fulfil these requirements, the company founded an innovation centre, called HELGA New Technology. Here, the focus was on developing new solutions as well as working on innovation projects, away from the company’s day-to-day business. During a visit to the SPS show in Germany,
Schoisswohl ran into Markus Kiele-Dunsche, the innovation manager for engineering and automation at Lenze. Here, he presented Lenze’s approach to realising a Digital Twin with the Asset Administration Shell. Schoisswohl, searching for applications for the shell, was totally enthusiastic about the concept. He thought: “What if I could get all relevant
machine data fully automatically? That would be amazing, wouldn’t it? Then I would reduce the effort I had before to virtually zero.”

So, this is exactly what the company did. Schoisswohl explained: “We have created an application called Shopfloor Assistant, which is intended to support production in the glass industry. Here we integrated Asset Administration Shell with Lenze’s help.” Explaining the approach taken, Kiele-Dunsche
said: “It took about a month, with some online meetings, and then the whole thing was up and running. HEGLA had built a mechanism that could automatically integrate information in the Asset Administration Shell. The implemented Digital Twin has proven its worth.” Of benefit, complete
structures including passive AAS parts could be integrated automatically, which proved hugely beneficial. Normally you would have to create the structure and content manually. But, imagine a complex machine structure, with 100 to 150 items, from different suppliers with different data structure – the effort for data integration would be tremendous. This has been reduced to nearly zero, the company explained.

Commenting on the benefits of the approach, Schoisswohl said: “The structure of the Asset Administration Shell is revolutionary because it standardises the most diverse components of the Digital Twin. But, it is also so interesting for us. We hope that many component suppliers will now join in. “The solution makes the merging and
documentation of machines much faster – and that is the beauty of the system for us.” Kiele-Dunsche concluded: “With the Asset
Administration Shell, Industry 4.0 is really close at hand.”
