CONSTRUCTION AND AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY TO BENEFIT FROM TWO-COMPONENT, INJECTION-MOULDED BEARINGS
igus has found a way to manufacture heavy-duty bearings made from two components of high- performance plastic, using the cost-effective injection
moulding process. Until now, a plastic-based multi- layer structure was only possible using a winding, which is more expensive for mass production. As an example, when an excavator bucket supporting hundreds of kilograms of sand moves, enormous loads act on bearing points – and these have been met mainly with igutex series plain bearings. These bearings are made of more than one material in a winding process. With integrated solid lubricants, the inner layer ensures low- friction, dry running; while the outer layer provides the strength. Now, however, the company has managed to produce a multi-layer structure using injection moulding and still combined materials with complementary properties. The result is the iglidur Q3E series.
HIGH PERFORMANCE BEARINGS SUPPLIED FOR ROCKET PROPULSION ENGINES
Carter Manufacturing is sponsoring the ‘Launch Canada 2023’ competition, a partnership which has been arranged through its US based facility Carter Americas, which is sponsoring ‘Launch Canada’ on a non-profit basis. The company’s experience in developing and supplying bearings for cryogenic applications has proven to be extremely helpful to the Launch Canada Group, helping to guide the next generation of students towards successful launches of aircraft using ‘greener energy’ solutions. Erick Sloan, chief operating officer
of Carter Americas, explained: “We are supplying bearings for a LOX-Kerosene engine which has been designed to perform under extreme conditions including exposure to Liquid Oxygen (LOX) in the turbo pump. Ensuring bearings exceed expectations in extreme environments requires cutting-edge bearing engineering knowledge along
with outstanding manufacturing capabilities and materials.” The Launch Canada 2023 competition was held in September at Timmins in Ontario with 18 student teams participating. Adam Trumpour, a propulsion specialist with Launch Canada commented: “This year we significantly expanded our activities, partnering with Mattagami First Nation holding a series of outreach events with local students, including the obligatory model rocket launches. This was the first time students could engage with the aerospace industry demonstrating their rocket engine projects, including one with a 9000 lb thrust LOX- Kerosene engine which successfully completed two 10 second hot firings and now holds the world record as the largest student-built rocket engine ever tested.”

“Thanks to the new technology, we can now
manufacture multi-component heavy-duty bearings in volume series using very cost- effective injection moulding,” explained Rob Dumayne, drytech director at igus UK The plain bearings made of iglidur Q3E are
suitable for heavy-duty applications in which bearings made of metal or fibre composite bushings are traditionally used and where cost savings can be achieved, including the construction and agricultural machinery industries. The bearings’ maximum dynamic surface pressure is 75 MPa.

BEARING MEET THE DEMANDS OF RAILWAY APPLICATIONS
Bearings for use in traction motors and locomotive gearboxes, as well for railcars, trams and underground trains, are available from NKE Austria. Bearings for gearboxes operate at high speeds and under high loads, and they must be able to withstand shocks, vibration and extreme temperatures. Bearings for traction motors need a long service life. Cylindrical roller bearings,
tapered roller bearings, angular contact ball bearings, four point contact ball bearings and deep groove ball bearings tend to be used in rail vehicle gearboxes. In traction motors, meanwhile, cylindrical roller bearings and deep groove ball bearings are typical. These bearing types are often electrically insulated, with a corresponding coating on the outer or inner ring. For particularly demanding applications, hybrid variants are available. The rolling elements of hybrid bearings are
made from heavy duty silicon nitride (Si3N4), an extremely hard wearing ceramic. Bearings for gearboxes and traction motors can also be customised and produced to special specifications, for example higher thermal resistance or more stringent tolerance ranges. NKE’s electrically insulated cylindrical roller bearings and
deep groove ball bearings have an oxide ceramic coating which protects against bearing damage from current passing through. The insulation significantly reduces the risk of damaged raceways and premature ageing of the lubricant, and has a dielectric strength of 1000 V and 3000 V with DC or AC voltage respectively. Bearings are available with insulation on the outer ring (SQ77) or on the inner ring (SQ77E). NKE’s hybrid deep groove ball bearings offer a high
degree of protection against damaging bearing currents, and offer prolonged service life, quiet running, and low friction and associated losses.
