SMART POWER SUPPLIES NOW FEATURE AN ETHERCAT INTERFACE
DIN-Rail power supplies and Field power supplies equipped with a fully integrated EtherCAT interface are now available from PULS. This, the company explains,
allows users to configure and remotely control the power supplies quickly and efficiently, while also providing access to measurement data which enables reliable monitoring and predictive
maintenance of both the power supply and the end system. Power supplies with integrated EtherCAT ports can be directly connected to
EtherCAT controllers without the need for additional gateways, providing easy and rapid access to all application data and power supply functions. The real-time capabilities and high-speed transmission of EtherCAT is ideal for maintenance, logging and remote control in large-scale systems. Furthermore, the power supply data can also be used within real-time control
loops. Based on the data, drives or other high-energy users can be controlled in an optimal way to keep the dynamic power needs within the capabilities of the power supply system. This enables improved system efficiency as power supplies can be used at the optimal operating point.

Turtle Defib Cabinets has design the first solar and wind powered defibrillator cabinet in the UK. Mike Dowson, founder and managing director of the company said: “Our design angles the solar panel in a way that maximises power from the sun’s rays, but also comprises a wind turbine to ensure the cabinet works when the UK weather is at its worst. We also offer a remote monitoring option that provides a daily cabinet status, such as updates on environmental conditions, charge status, when the cabinet has been accessed, or if there are any faults.” The product creates an opportunity to set higher standards when it comes to saving lives in environments where an electricity supply may be restricted or cost-prohibitive to install, such as on construction sites, golf courses and public parks, and in the agricultural sector.

TO HELP AVIATION MEET DEMANDS FOR CLEAN, AFFORDABLE FLIGHTS
As joint recipient of a £10,000 Under 30s grant from Get It Made, Flux Aviation has accelerated development of its 75kW battery electric powertrain system. Designed as a drop-in replacement for existing combustion engines, the new electric powertrain system is part of Flux Aviation’s long-term goal of quiet, clean and affordable flights. Launched in August 2021, the aerospace start-up is the brainchild
of entrepreneurs Neofytos Dimitriou and Radovan Gallo. Gallo commented: “From 2-seat trainer aircraft and up to 50-seat regional airliners, we are helping aircraft manufacturers decarbonise their passenger and cargo fleets. Compatibility with a range of existing aircraft types will allow us to supply the existing market without having to design a completely new airframe. We are starting by electrifying the training aircraft market. These are typically 2-seat and 4-seat light aircraft used in aeroclubs and flight schools to train new pilots. This is our beachhead market to prove the technology and build relationships with the relevant regulators.” As Flux Aviation transitions towards flight testing of its prototype
motors and batteries, it is running a very hardware-rich and R&D intensive development programme. The support from Get It Made has allowed the company to develop and test new prototypes faster, to explore novel designs and achieve higher performance thanks to access to new capabilities and manufacturing techniques. Gallo added: “Compared to piston and turboprop engines, our
technology can reduce aircraft operating costs by over 30% and halve the perceived noise levels, while producing no greenhouse gas emissions at the point of use. Our complete powertrain systems act as direct replacements for popular combustion engines, and are integrated, heavily optimised units. What we represent is a turnkey solution with straightforward integration for customers. “Our ultimate ambition is to scale our technology to decarbonise
all regional and domestic flights. These are some of the most polluting flights in operation today, with all journeys shorter than 500 miles together accounting for over 20% of all aviation emissions. We genuinely believe that this innovation will re-ignite the general aviation industry and allow it to thrive into the future – one that’s quiet, clean and affordable for everyone.”

Red Bull Ford Powertrains is using the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio of industry software to rapidly develop the next generation hybrid ICE/electric driven Power Unit (PU) for the Formula 1 2026 racing season. Red Bull Ford Powertrains will build power units for both the Oracle Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Alpha Tauri F1 Teams and will be one of only six manufacturers supplying power units for the F1 series. From the announcement of its intent in 2021, Red Bull Ford Powertrains has set an ambitious goal of developing 2026-specification sustainable high-speed power units from the ground-up, while meeting new specifications from F1. Like any start-up, the company is breaking new ground with every component design, especially given the lack of historical data, in
the extremely secretive world of powertrains development. Ben Hodgkinson, technical
director, Red Bull Powertrains, said: “Siemens Xcelerator is the digital backbone of our design and manufacturing journey, enabling us to concurrently engineer hundreds of rapid design evolutions across a large newly formed team; ensuring each designer has visibility and knowledge of what their colleagues are working on. “It is especially challenging as we don’t have the luxury of historical data: every component, down to the nuts and bolts of the engine, has to be modelled from scratch. This means the design

quality and ease of use from Siemens’ NX, combined with collaboration and lifecycle management with Teamcenter, is a critical factor for success.” In addition to Siemens’ NX software for product engineering and Teamcenter software for product lifecycle management (PLM), the
Red Bull Ford Powertrains team leverages the simulation and test capabilities of Siemens’ Simcenter STAR-CCM+ software to assist with design and validation across the project.
