INDUSTRY NEWS MCLENNAN FORMS PARTNERSHIP WITH LIN ENGINEERING
Mclennan has expanded and strengthened its product range following a partnership agreement with USA-based Lin Engineering, a subsidiary company of the MOONS’ group of high-performance motion control components manufacturers. Lin Engineering manufactures a wide range that includes rotary stepper motors, linear actuators, brushless DC motors, micro–DC motors and frameless torque motors, as well as paired gear units and AGV/AMR drive wheels and custom motion systems. Through its own in-house design, assembly and production capabilities and the ability to competitively source a wealth of motion control and other components
from MOONS’ global engineering subsidiaries, the ISO9001, AS9100D and TS16949 certified manufacturer offers specialist services that include a two-week prototype turnaround and motor design optimisation for OEMs. Of particular interest
for Mclennan, Lin Engineering’s ‘Zero-Tech’ specialist approach encompasses several advanced motion control technologies designed to overcome common engineering challenges in
HONEYWELL BES EV SENSOR: ADVANCED THERMAL RUNAWAY PREVENTION
The Honeywell Battery Safety Electrolyte Sensor (BES) is an advanced automotive-grade solution for early detection of venting and thermal runaway in Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery systems. It uses a patented rate-of-change algorithm to identify electrolyte vapour during the initial First Vent phase, as well as hydrogen and carbon monoxide
released in thermal runaway events. Detecting First Vent early is vital, providing a 5- to 20-minute window for intervention before thermal runaway occurs, depending on the type and severity of battery abuse. Unlike conventional ppm-based sensors, the BES detects rapid concentration changes, enhancing accuracy while reducing false positives and negatives. The BES is designed for seamless
integration, with CAN 2.0B output and diagnostic features. It reduces development
costs by eliminating the need for precise gas threshold validation, and
offers a 15-year performance life in harsh automotive environments. Compatible with all Li-Ion chemistries and resistant to siloxane poisoning, the BES is suitable for passenger EVs, heavy-duty EVs, e-buses, and premium electric vehicles. The BES LITE variant, designed for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Urban Air Mobility (UAM), UAVs, and micro-mobility, offers a cost-effective, lightweight alternative for smaller-scale applications.

DC motors. Applied individually or combined to deliver superior performance and reliability, these include minimising excessive detent torque for smoother operation, eliminating backlash for precise position control, reducing cogging for uniform motion, compacting motor length to fit into smaller spaces, and enhancing
durability against harsh environmental conditions.

NEW HANDBOOK FOR DC DRIVE SYSTEM SELECTION LAUNCHED BY MAXON
‘Selection of DC Drives – Guidelines with Calculations’, a new handbook from maxon, provides a systematic approach to drive selection. Designed to help engineers select DC motors and drive system
products, this includes a six-step flowchart, providing a clear path to select the drive system specific to application requirements. The chapters dedicated to each drive system component also offer the formulae required to select the right product at each stage. Illustrations and descriptions of the variables bring the formulae to life and help to clarify the requirements of drive systems for real-world applications. Along with an overview of kinematics; force, torque, and power; and the mechanics of drive systems, the book includes details on the selection of individual drive system components including DC and BLDC (brushless DC) motors, gearheads, encoders, as well as controllers for speed, position, and multi-axis applications.
