Luceco has recently supplied an energy saving LED lighting solution to Westlands in Yeovil, Somerset.
Operated by South Somerset District Council alongside The Octagon Theatre, Westlands offers the ideal venue for sports and entertainment. A host of LED luminaries from Luceco were installed by R.E.F Electrics Taunton Ltd, working in partnership with EDP Environmental in Exeter, including Platinum, Climate, LuxBay, LuxPanel, Atom, Academy and Atlas. LuxBay luminaires were used in the purpose-built fitness gym, refurbished squash courts and sports hall, providing cost-effective LED lighting for this multi-use area.
Platinum downlight luminaires offering potential running cost savings of up to 80% over traditional lamped fittings were installed in meeting rooms, fitness suites and dance studios as well as circulation areas such the lounge bar, entrance lobby and reception.
Offering 50,000 hours of operational, maintenance free life, Platinum has an impressive efficacy of 129 Llm/cW.

Other luminaires included the Atlas Bulkhead, providing an alternative to traditional 28 and 38 watt 2D compact fluorescent fittings, were installed in changing rooms.
LuxPanel was used in corridors throughout the complex and linear Academy luminaires were installed in the recreation and storage areas. The University of Nottingham’s £23m GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry has been designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘outstanding’ rating and be carbon neutral within 25 years of operation. A key contributor of those targets has been the ventilation, developed by Imtech in partnership with Gilberts Blackpool. Imtech won a Project of the Year award for its overall involvement in the building services provision.

The 60,000sq ft building focuses on a timber frame, PV panels and natural ventilation for its green credentials. To optimise fresh air within the five research labs and communal spaces, Gilberts’ DGA ceiling diffusers, NV transfer grilles, GSFA swirl diffusers, GX air valves, egg crates and linear bar grilles were selected, with Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modelling undertaken to prove the performance objectives for intake and extract. “Achievement of the carbon neutral criteria was paramount,” explained Gilberts’ National Sales
Manager, Pete Sedgwick. “That even took into account embodied carbon, materials, methods of production and delivery. The original design was revised to help realise the carbon neutral target, with the introduction of a variable air volume system and over-sized ductwork.
“Gilberts undertakes all elements of the design and manufacturing process in-house, at our Blackpool headquarters, so that in itself contributed towards the sustainability element. Internal ventilation grilles had to be selected that would deliver the performance criteria, easily integrate into the structure and arrive on site in a timely manner. Schedules were tight, but we were uniquely positioned to work with Imtech to achieve the over-riding environmental criteria, and give the delivery assurances needed.”

British speedway team Belle Vue Aces is providing fans with more enlightening race days after installing standalone lighting controls and a fully addressable lighting control system from CP Electronics. The products are providing greater energy efficiency for the club’s new £8m stadium.
CP gets Belle Vue Aces back on track at new stadium
CP’s lighting control technologies have been installed in the stadium’s banqueting suite, storeroom facilities and washrooms, amongst other areas. This is in addition to adding energy control functionality to Belle Vue’s new National Basketball Performance Centre, located just past the racetrack in Belle Vue Village.
Not only will these controls help to ensure that lighting is only being switched on when used, but they will also deliver an enhanced environment for spectators visiting the sporting complex.
RAPID, and effective PIR installation
Key to this efficient energy usage is the installation of CP’s fully addressable RAPID lighting control system in the stadium’s upstairs rooms, notably its large banqueting suite. The networked solution combines state-of-the-art technology and modular mechanics, with an easy to use graphical interface.
It has been installed alongside the company’s EBR-4SC scene plate, which can be easily programmed and
customised by the end user, to provide dimmable lighting performance and scene setting, depending on how the suite is being used.
Ameon Building Service Engineering, the primary contractor involved in the build, also installed a range of CP’s standalone passive infrared (PIR) presence detectors, which are reducing the amount of time lighting is left on unnecessarily.
These PIRs constantly scan the detection zone for body heat and movement, switching lighting on only when this is detected. For areas including washroom facilities, changing rooms, storeroom areas and kiosks, this is typically resulting in up to 60% savings on usual lighting energy costs.
For the lower floors of Belle Vue Aces’ new stadium, CP’s push-button GESM surface-mounted PIR has been installed to deliver easy on/off switching at lux level, together with a time delay function which can easily be set by the end user.

uPolypipe Terrain worked with landscape architects Gustafson Porter + Bowman to design, manufacture and install a hard landscaped roof for Seacoal House.
The existing Seacoal House building owned by UK Power Networks had a sedum roof, however the surrounding taller structures meant that the original roof did not receive natural sunlight, and therefore all vegetation had died, leaving the roof looking unsightly. Polypipe Terrain worked with landscape architects Gustafson Porter + Bowman to design, manufacture and install a hard landscaped roof for the building. It was crucial that the plans included a stormwater management solution and attenuation system, for which Polypipe’s Permavoid was specified. The result was a permeable surface with aluminium detailing, with Permavoid tanked in a membrane to manage and control stormwater run-off, which delivered the green roof surrounding that office workers are enjoying today.
At only 85mm in depth, Permavoid was ideal for a rooftop application. In addition, the Permavoid cells boast a 95% void ratio and incorporate a unique jointing mechanism that forms an interlocking ‘tensile

raft’. The void ratio of the Permavoid cells allowed the architect to reduce the number of rainwater outlets used in the roof.
All drainage requirements had to be accurately modelled prior to on-site installation, due to a section of the roof sitting above an electrical substation. The team at Polypipe was able to construct and configure the Permavoid cells to meet the required specification. With the modular system manufactured from plastic, it was light in weight and therefore easy to handle and install.
