MODUTHERM BOILERS RESTORE HEATING AND HOT WATER FOR APARTMENT RESIDENTS
C
ommercial heating specialists Modutherm successfully came to the aid of residents at Lattice House, Aldgate when the building’s boiler plant failed, leaving the apartments with
no heating or hot water. The situation was successfully rectified when three Genesis WM 120kW boilers from Modutherm were fitted on an in-line cascade system. Not only were the boilers installed promptly, they also offered higher modulation and saved space inside the plantroom, with easier access aiding ongoing maintenance. When the breakdown occurred, the Lattice House management team
called upon Aaron Housen, of Dunamis Heating & Mechanical Services, to urgently help restore a reliable source of heating and hot water. He had to act quickly to get the project off the ground and ensure the essential services were returned to residents as quickly as possible. He then contacted Modutherm, having used the company’s products on previous projects, to source an effective and efficient heating system.
Upon discussing the application, the Genesis WM units were selected as the most suitable option available. Commenting on the decision to use Modutherm’s Genesis WM range, Aaron said: “The three wall-mounted boilers were ideal for the small plant room and freed up crucial space, enabling all the LTHW circulators to be relocated to the rear wall. Also, as the plant room had previously experienced flooding, moving such key components to high level was imperative. The three boilers will also be able to respond better to system demands, as well as provide contingency in the event of any future issues.” He continued: “We are really impressed with the boilers, as are the building owners, due to the boilers having a better turndown ratio than the previous appliances, which should reduce gas consumption. Plus, the cascade frame was perfect, as it allowed us to minimise build time and get the system operational sooner.” Modutherm’s Genesis wall-mounted condensing boiler is available

OCOTEC Consultancy (Scotland) partnered with a thermal power station in North East Scotland to address their regulatory compliance and environmental requirements by firstly creating
a comprehensive Soil and Groundwater Management Plan (SGWMP). This plan focused on identifying Relevant Hazardous Substances (RHS) utilised at the Part A installation and evaluating their potential impact on underlying soil and groundwater conditions. As per the SGWMP, additional soil and groundwater information was
identified as necessary to compile an updated Site Condition Report (SCR). SOCOTEC’s involvement encompassed several critical stages, including: •
Overseeing drilling operations and designing 20 new soil and bedrock groundwater monitoring wells
Developing, purging, and sampling groundwater wells, along with in-situ data collection
Collecting representative soil and groundwater samples for
Designing a complex soil and groundwater investigation plan, supervised throughout a seven-week period

Assessing findings and preparing a comprehensive Site Condition Report.
Rotary drilling techniques were employed to advance holes to varying depths, including bedrock coring. Following the completion of each borehole, a groundwater monitoring well was installed to intercept groundwater response zones. Groundwater was purged, and in-situ water parameters (pH, electrical conductivity, temperature, total dissolved solids, and redox potential) were tested. The collected soil and groundwater samples were sent to SOCOTEC’s
UKAS accredited laboratories for extensive chemical analysis, covering a broad spectrum of relevant hazardous substances, as delineated in the SGWMP. The derived data underwent meticulous evaluation to ascertain the condition of on-site soil and groundwater, leading to insights into necessary mitigation measures. The culmination of these findings resulted in the preparation of a comprehensive Site Condition Report. This thorough investigation and reporting were vital for the thermal power station to demonstrate compliance with their PPC permit and

s GEZE UK celebrate 35 years in business, one of the company’s longest serving members of staff, Area Sales Manager, Barry Topham, celebrates 25 years with the company.

he started there was just 23 staff and turnover of £3m, today the company employs over 250 people and turnover is over £35m. Barry has also witnessed many changes in the industry, he
says “The growth of automated doors and the windows sector is astounding, yet there have also been negative changes. There has been a deterioration of quality on site, such as the use of chipboard doors, and the influx of low quality, inferior finished products at lowest price is not good - it means the expected product life is far too short. However, the GEZE brand is still recognised in the market place as a reliable, quality supplier of door and window control products – and one of the reasons I have stayed. Another, is my customers – I always do what is best for both
GEZE and the customer and my relationships with the vast majority of them is excellent and akin to friendship, which makes doing
business more pleasurable.” Barry runs his sales area as if it was his own company, his extensive knowledge of the market and the GEZE products enables him to ensure his customers get the advice they need and the best solution for their project. Andy Howland, GEZE UK’s Sales and Marketing Director said “I have worked with Barry for many years, his knowledge of GEZE and the industry is second to none, he is dedicated and passionate about what he does and is a real asset to the company.” Previous to joining GEZE Barry worked as an Architectural Ironmonger
and was a GEZE customer so he knows the business from both sides. Originally, he was employed at GEZE as a Specification Manager working with architects and planners but as soon as an Area Sales Manager role became available he snapped it up. Barry now covers central England and south Wales. To find out more about GEZE UK and the comprehensive range of automatic and manual door closers, and window technology products, email

ensure that proper mitigation measures were in place to safeguard the water environment from ongoing site operations. The comprehensive Site Condition Report fulfilled regulatory requirements and furnished a robust data set to support future site condition assessments and potential infrastructure development. SOCOTEC Consultancy (Scotland) played a pivotal role in facilitating
the creation of a detailed Soil and Groundwater Management Plan, executing a complex hydrogeological investigation, and preparing the Site Condition Report for submission to the environmental regulator SEPA. The study provided the client with expert advice, essential data, and positioning for regulatory standards adherence and potential future development projects at the Power Station site. The outcomes of this investigation have the potential to contribute to the UK’s Carbon Capture Strategy, underscoring SOCOTEC’s involvement in shaping sustainable and environmentally conscious initiatives.
