EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Are our buildings equipped for heatwaves?
T
he recent heatwaves which saw record- breaking temperatures grip the nation has brought into question just how equipped our
businesses are to cope. On 19 July, temperatures exceeded 40˚C in certain parts of the country with many weather stations also breaking previous UK temperature records. It is also feared that climate change could see a
regular recurrence of such intense heatwaves. The oppressive heat was coupled with a serious lack of rainfall prompting the declaration of drought in many parts of the country.
This poses a dilemma for building services managers who must now examine how resilient our buildings are to cope with heatwaves, but must also take a serious look at their water consumption. A report from the Climate Change Committee
indicates that 570,000 properties constructed since 2016 are not fit for high temperatures with another 1.5 billion set to be built in the next five years. Yet there are a number of approaches that can be taken to keep building stock cool and perhaps now is the time for building managers to consider all the options when it comes to temperature control. Water conservation is another no-brainer with the
Environment Agency indicating that without water saving measures we could be heading for a shortfall of 3.5 billion litres of water by 2050. Britsafe also reminds us that a loss of water supply could cost a business millions, and every litre pumped has a cost and a carbon footprint attached to it. Climate change is already having an impact on businesses, so it’s time to act before it’s too late. Heather Ramsden, Editor
