Ideal Heating launches CIBSE accredited Heat Networks & HIU CPD
I
deal Heating – Commercial Products has introduced a new
CIBSE accredited CPD to its collection, on Heat Networks and Heat Interface Units. The new CPD provides an overview of the benefits of heat networks and the role that Heat Interface Units (HIUs) play in ensuring the thermal comfort of the end user and the efficient operation of the network.
Predominantly a
beginner’s guide to heat networks, aimed at those who have a basic knowledge but little first-hand exposure, the new CPD describes the concept of heat networks and their key benefits. It goes on to focus on HIUs, explaining their role as the appliance that transfers the thermal energy from the network to provide heating and hot water for the end user. The basic principles of HIU operation, along with common components and some typical mechanical and electronic functions for HIUs are addressed. To ensure the network and the HIUs are operating in harmony, at their optimum, there are aspects
that installers should consider when choosing an HIU, as well as things to avoid. The new Heat Networks and Heat Interface Units CPD provides invaluable advice on these, gained from Ideal Heating’s extensive experience in heat networks with its own POD HIU range. The hour long Heat Networks and Heat Interface Units CPD can be delivered online or in person,
either at a customers’ premises or at one of Ideal Heating’s Centres of Excellence in Hull and Leeds. These premises have recently been completely refurbished to convert them into state of the art training facilities, with Ideal Heating’s commercial products installed so attendees can get interactive, hands-on training. The CPD can also be tailored to suit specific businesses and their requirements. The CIBSE accredited Heat Networks and Heat Interface Units CPD is detailed in Ideal Heating’s new Commercial Products Training Courses brochure, which also includes other CPDs and training courses offered by the company. Martindale introduces the new advanced Proving Unit rang
artindale Electric has introduced four new proving units to its industry-leading
range. Safe electrical working requires the use of a voltage indicator that has been proven with a suitable proving device, before and after use, to ensure the instrument is working correctly, in accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations. The new Proving Units come with all the benefits of the existing Martindale PD440S and PD690S, featuring over-moulded low- profile cases with magnetic hangers. The Martindale PD230SRD, PD440SRD, PD440SRDX and PD690SRD are fast and easy to use, instantly supplying the test voltage for both high and low impedance voltage indicators, test lamps and meters. The units have AC / DC output’s selectable by a push button switch and stepped voltage output, matched to two pole tester thresholds with three maximum output voltages across the range: 230V, 440V and 690V. It’s good practice to match the output voltage of the proving unit with the voltage range of the instrument to be proved; the new series simplifies coordinating devices as they are colour-coded with Martindale voltage indicators. The SRDX model has a unique CALCHECK feature, making it easy to verify insulation and low resistance ranges on 18th Edition multifunction testers, wherever you are working, making it ideal for identifying potential calibration issues with a multifunction tester prior to certifying a new wiring installation or carrying out a condition report. It is also a valuable procedure recognised by electrical contractor assessment bodies. In addition, the new SRD and SRDX models have stepped voltage LEDs with thresholds matched to most voltage indicators and two pole testers. All units have long battery life with low battery indicator and auto power-off feature. For more information on the Martindale Electric range of proving units, visit our website.

Gilberts delivers @ Sandwell Aquatics Centre
ilberts has dived into the challenge of delivering a sports venue fit for international competition and evolving it to a state-of-the-art community facility to engage local residents.
Sandwell Aquatics Centre was conceived for the 2022 Commonwealth Games with the intention of its evolution into an inclusive centre of excellence for the community. It set the pace for progammes of this type: consultants Arup achieved design to completion in just three years- half the typical duration. With three pools including a 50m Olympic sized one, 100+
gym stations, a sports hall, dry diving area, sauna, indoor cycling studio and a café, one of the major challenges for Arup was designing the building services, for installation by Shepherd Building Services (part of Wates Group). As the UK’s leading air movement specialist Gilberts was chosen
to support Arup and Wates to address the diverse and potentially aggressive environments. Components needed to deliver the indoor air quality, adequate extraction of moisture and CO2 and supply of conditioned air appropriate for each area. Gilberts worked closely with the team from outset to completion providing advice and technical support
for the design. It has produced more than 270 different types and configurations of grilles and diffusers for the facility, including its popular GSJA swirl diffusers, vision-proof transfer grilles, linear bar grilles and air valves. Gilberts added various finishes- suitable for the diverse environments- included brush finish, matt black
and gloss to RAL9010 pure white, in line with the specification. “The concept was to create a long-lasting legacy that will make the centre a ‘go to’ place to inspire
people to be active,” says Martin Malyon, Gilberts Midlands Area Sales Manager. “Behind that is the holistic endeavour that everyone who works in or uses the Centre needs to be comfortable whether they are working at a desk or working out in the gym, relaxing in the café or swimming. Getting the delivery and quality of air right is critical. It was a complex challenge, a challenge we have delivered.” Adds Alison Kilby, Associate Director Building Engineering @ Arup, “The decision to use Gilberts ultimately came from SES Engineering Services Limited who were the M&E sub-contractor however, using local products to minimise the embodied carbon in installations is always something that we consider on the projects Arup work on. Local design and production are a big benefit and a step towards reducing the embodied carbon on the building services installations on new build schemes.” Sandwell Aquatics Centre is the latest in a line of prestige sporting venues for which Gilberts has provided key building services components, including the London Stadium, Anfield, and Wimbledon. Founded 60 years ago, and still family-owned, Gilberts is the UK’s leading independent air movement
engineer. It is unique in its ability to design, manufacture and test all products- including bespoke fabrications- in-house, to the extent it even designs and manufactures its own tools at its 140,000 sq ft head office and production facility.
