ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

powerful waves from the North Sea’s long fetch. In order to mitigate this, a coastal engineering project was initiated. A combination of beach nourishment, revetments and rock groynes was employed with the intention of bolstering the shoreline’s natural defences and absorbing the wave’s energy to minimise further erosion. This project was successful in slowing coastal retreat, protecting vital infrastructure and local communities. Ongoing maintenance and remediation ensured these structures continue to stand strong against the coast’s dynamism.

What standards should be taken into consideration?

There are a number of established standards and guidelines in which construction professionals can draw insight from. The Coastal Engineering Manual (CEM) for example, covers a vast spectrum of coastal engineering topics, and serves as a practical reference for industry professionals. Additionally, BS 6349 (2012): Maritime Works, General. Code of Practice for Geotechnical outlines recommendations for geotechnical activities associated with the design, construction and maintenance of coastal works.
