LIGHTING & LIGHTING CONTROLS

From dim to dazzling: re-lighting a london warehouse

When it comes to lighting in industrial spaces, an effective installation must go beyond simply enhancing visibility. Flexibility, energy efficiency, intelligent control and improving user comfort are all key lighting considerations in modern working environments, helping facilities meet operational, regulatory and sustainability goals

A

pproached by the owners of an ageing warehouse building in London, Ansell Lighting’s latest renovation project is a great example of how tailored lighting design can deliver on

all of these requirements. In need of a complete overhaul, the objective was to implement a modern lighting solution that would not only enhance staff productivity and wellbeing but also strengthen sustainability credentials and user safety across every area of the buildings’ diverse warehousing, office, reception and external spaces. Following a thorough review and analysis of the premises, its current lighting installation, operative requirements and long-term performance expectations, the design team designed a modern and responsive lighting solution that has completely transformed the premises. The tailored solution combines smart- controlled industrial LEDs, robust emergency fittings, stylish office luminaires and robust exterior floodlighting to ensure every objective surrounding safety, efficiency and visual appeal has been achieved throughout.

The warehouse area

At the heart of the project sits the expansive warehouse. The space demanded powerful,

efficient, and intelligently controlled lighting, for Z LED Performance high bay luminaires were specified. Providing reliable, high-output illumination, the high bays deliver exceptional efficacy, ensuring consistent, wide-area coverage that reduces shadows and enhances visibility for warehouse staff. With a robust IP65 construction and long lifespan, the fittings are the ideal option for industrial environments where durability and low maintenance are essential. To further optimise energy savings and maximise the benefits of the high-performance lighting, OCTO IP66 Smart High Bay Open Area PIR Sensors were also fitted throughout the warehouse to help maximise energy efficiency across the space. These integrated sensors give the luminaires smart connectivity, ensuring that they automatically adjust output based on occupancy and ambient light levels. OCTO Indoor Wireless Smart Switches were also fitted, allowing staff to control and program lighting scenes conveniently, creating a responsive and adaptable lighting environment throughout the warehouse. The team also specified a new, comprehensive emergency lighting scheme throughout the warehouse. This includes Guardian bulkhead units along key exit routes and work areas, providing clear visibility in critical situations and ensuring full regulatory compliance and peace of mind for facility managers. The Hawk Universal Lithium Emergency Kit was also specified to convert standard LED luminaires into reliable emergency fittings, safeguarding operations in the even of a power failure.

Office and warehouse interface

Where the warehouse meets the office areas, a lighting scheme that bridges the functional needs of industrial space with a more comfortable environment for staff was required. Here, linear Nouline LED battens were specified. Delivering high-quality, uniform illumination with excellent glare control, the battens are the ideal option to support both practical tasks and staff well-being. The Nouline’s modern aesthetic

also integrates seamlessly into the transitional area between warehouse and office, creating a professional and pleasant workspace.

Upstairs office and reception

For the upstairs office and reception areas, designers focused on delivering a solution that would offer both visual comfort and architectural appeal. Here, Vasco CCT Bi- Directional Suspended Linear luminaires were chosen. The fittings deliver bi-directional light distribution, casting light both upwards and downwards to create balanced ambient lighting with reduced shadows and an inviting atmosphere. The Vasco also offers CCT (correlated colour temperature) switching, giving the facility flexibility to adjust the lighting tone to suit time of day or task, enhancing occupant comfort and delivering a premium first impression in client-facing reception spaces.

Exterior lighting

The exterior of the warehouse facility required powerful illumination for security, staff safety, and vehicle access. Here, the Aztec Floodlight was specified as the ideal solution, delivering high-lumen output in a slim, modern design. The robust IP65-rated floodlight provides excellent wide-area coverage for the building perimeter, loading bays, and parking areas, deterring unauthorised access while ensuring staff can move around the site safely after dark. This London warehouse project demonstrates the importance of careful and considered lighting design. From robust industrial fittings with advanced smart controls to elegant office luminaires and secure exterior floodlighting, every area has been carefully specified to meet the unique demands of the space. The result is a cohesive, energy-efficient lighting installation that enhances safety, productivity and comfort throughout the facility. The warehouse is now illuminated to the highest standards across both the warehouse and administrative areas, as well as the surrounding exterior.
