INDUSTRY COMMENT Recognising industry
excellence and innovation: Why it matters
Whether it’s the Oscars, the BAFTAs or the Brit Awards, being shortlisted for an award – let alone winning one – is an incredible honour for those proud of their craft. While less likely to receive the attention the aforementioned examples
generate, industry awards, especially for the ultra-competitive building controls and automation sector, are an equally important way of shining a spotlight on richly-deserving
contributors to a burgeoning field. Stacey Lucas, President of the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) comments

ith the sector, and the construction industry as a whole, under increasing pressure to meet ever-tightening deadlines and budgets, rewarding those individuals and organisations that are going above and beyond is crucial – not
only for those nominated but also for those inspired by the successes of others. Indeed, in a world where visibility is critical and competition
fierce, awards are far more than just shiny trophies. They can be incredibly powerful tools for credibility, long-term growth and motivation.
The necessity of validation
Simply being nominated can boost participant confidence – regardless of whether they win. This can typically serve as external validation for an individual’s expertise, hard work and impact on the sector, such as their significant involvement in a project or their drive to enhance their professional development and lead the industry forward. In competitive industries such as the building energy management systems (BEMS) sector, self- doubt can be fairly common. Receiving recognition and acknowledgement of dedication and hard work can sometimes reassure individuals they are on the right career path.
Heightened motivation
Even being nominated, let alone winning, can have a major impact on the motivations and determination of participants, with many finding themselves uncovering depths of drive and motivation they didn’t realise they had. Furthermore, being acknowledged for their efforts can instil participants with a sense
of responsibility to uphold and maintain the standard that led to the recognition in the first place. Consequently, this can inspire further professional or personal development – creating a brighter future for those in the industry and the built environment as a whole.
Enhanced visibility and credibility
Award success can also benefit businesses – with organisations often noticing enhanced credibility and reputation among peers, clients and investors. Indeed, the exposure from being named in promotional material and publications can shine a positive spotlight on the organisations participating, regardless of whether they win. Additionally, nominations and award wins can act as third-party endorsements that help businesses build trust and attract new clients.
Gaining an advantage
In competitive industries, standing out can make a huge difference when it comes to customer choice. Serving as a sign of reliability and real quality, nominations – and especially award success – can be key factors in purchasing decisions for budget- conscious consumers. As a result, awards can truly set businesses, brands and organisations apart from their competition in often highly-crowded marketplaces.
Employee attraction and retention
Celebrating award success, or even just nomination, can often provide a significant boost to employee productivity and morale, with team members feeling more valued and recognised. This fosters a positive work culture, improves employee retention rates and reduces burnout.
Alongside encouraging staff retention, award nominations and success can also result in potential incomings. Put simply, external individuals will want to work for a company that is positively impacting the industry and the environment. As the BEMS sector’s only recognised body, the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) annually acknowledges the incredible innovation and expertise in display across the industry through its prestigious BCIA Awards. Entries for the BCIA Awards 2026 are now open and anyone from across the entire BEMS sector is welcome to enter, regardless of whether companies are members. There are 11 categories to enter and nominations can be submitted here.
