ou can’t fail to have noticed the growing movement against climate change, with the ‘Extinction Rebellion’ protestors causing chaos at various key locations in London and around the world. Whether you agree with their methods or not, they have certainly highlighted this crucial issue even further by generating plenty of national news coverage.

I think most people agree that we are facing a crisis and potential environmental catastrophe if we don’t act soon and do something to drastically change our lifestyles, reduce carbon emissions and clean up the environment. There’s no denying that we have seen the effects of climate change first hand, with hotter and drier

summers and wetter and colder winters. However, stopping ordinary people from getting to work on public transport and bringing one of the world’s largest financial capitals to a standstill is unlikely to endear the protestors to the general public and could easily backfire.

As one of the largest energy users and therefore emission producers, the buildings sector is coming under increasing scrutiny and growing pressure to improve efficiency and help mitigate its role in causing climate change. And I’m pleased to say that this important subject has been at the top of the agenda and spoken about at length at every meeting, press conference and product launch I’ve attended recently. It is of course in all our interests to do as much as we can to improve

the environment for many good reasons, which includes commerce. It’s only through financially successful business that manufacturers are able to spend on the research and development that pushes the boundaries of technology and allows them to develop innovative new solutions to the various problems we face. Due to ever tightening legislation and the hastening pace towards becoming a low carbon economy, manufacturers are considering a growing range of environmental factors when launching new products. It’s not just the energy they might consume once in operation anymore, key features these days are also likely to highlight the energy used in a product’s manufacture, the materials chosen for construction, as well as it’s

overall lifecycle and recyclability. This is all very laudable and as an industry and a country, we are certainly heading in the right direction towards a much more energy efficient and sustainable future, but now we need other industry sectors and the world’s worst offending industrialised nations to get on board and follow our lead.
