EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Smart lighting for modern buildings

W

hen it comes to lighting systems in commercial buildings, it’s no longer just a matter of ‘is the room is bright enough?’

Today’s modern systems can have a bearing on

energy, health, digital control, compliance and occupant experience. Different sectors have different priorities but there

are some key issues to bear in mind. This month we put these systems in the proverbial spotlight, exploring some of the challenges but also the opportunities for building managers. Fluorescent lighting has been used extensively in schools for decades, but with these lamps now being phased out, decisions have to be made when it comes time to replace and upgrade. Failed lamps will all need to be replaced with LED luminaries, but it’s easier said than done when a school is on a tight budget. However, there are

some things that can be done, and Collingwood Lighting offers advice on pg 12. One thing that has leapt forward with modern innovation is building controls which means there is a possibility of bridging the gap between lighting and building systems.

Zumbtobel Lighting explains, on pg 16, how

controls can take lighting from a standalone system and incorporate it into a wider eco system. Although a relatively new concept, Human Centric Lighting (HCL) is based on scientific ideas. In short it is an approach that aims to support human health, comfort, mood and performance. On pg 14 Ansell Lighting examines HCL in more depth, explaining how it can be integrated into a building services strategy, but more than that, how it can also drive energy efficiency and sustainability.
