LIGHTING & LIGHTING CONTROLS
Smart lighting helps film studio recreate diverse environments
Glamox, a specialist in lighting, has supplied smart lighting for Eastbrook Studios, described as London’s largest and most sustainable film and TV studios situated on a 21.5-acre site in Dagenham, East London
G
lamox’s customer, Dalkia UK, installed more than 1,600 Glamox smart LED luminaires along with an advanced light management system. The
lighting in the expansive studios delivers reliable, consistent performance in a highly demanding environment that can vary daily due to filming requirements. “The luminaires in our studio spaces needed to withstand elevated ambient temperatures, with emergency variants designed to operate reliably at up to 40°C,” said Mark Hudson, senior vice president, studio real estate & facilities (UK/EU). “At the same time, we wanted highly energy-efficient lighting for our offices, utility, storage, and support areas, in order to match our intent of being amongst our industry’s most sustainable film studios.” Created by film and television specialists The MBS Group and Hackman Capital Partners, the brand new 21.5-acre campus is home to 12 sound stages ranging in size from 1,486 square metres (16,000 square feet) to 2,973 square metres (32,000 square feet).
BREEAM Excellent rating
Eastbrook Studios achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating. The facility features photovoltaic roof panels, all-electric low-carbon HVAC systems, sedum roofs for rainwater management, and landscaping designed to promote biodiversity.
Smart metering systems and sustainable transport strategies further enhance the studio’s green credentials. “The studios required a highly controllable and energy-efficient lighting solution that would minimise the number of fittings used. The Ethernet2DALI lighting control system with advanced features and scalability was recommended, ensuring future-proof performance and flexibility,” said Alison Quinn, country manager for Glamox in the UK. “For the main studio spaces, our Cyberia high-bay industrial luminaires were chosen for their robust design and ability to withstand demanding
thermal conditions, ranging from -40 °C to +60 °C. This flexibility allows the recreation of sets for everything from polar scenes to steamy tropical jungles.”
In the office and support areas, SLIMLUX 108 luminaires were installed to achieve optimal lux levels, uniform light distribution, and high energy efficiency—meeting the overall design target with fewer fittings. Utility and storage areas were fitted with the i40 luminaire, while the CORRIST Endurance, with its IK10 impact rating and IP67 dust-tight and waterproof protection, provided an energy-efficient solution for under-canopy environments.
