AVERTISEMENT FEATURE Investing in low-carbon ventilation design
As the built environment continues to evolve, consultants are under pressure to deliver buildings that balance energy efficiency, indoor air quality and occupant comfort. Achieving this requires not only the right technologies but also the correct technical support and delivery capability behind them
F
or Breathing Buildings, this has defined its approach since its 2006 origins at the University of Cambridge. Now marking 20 years in the ventilation industry, the company remains focused on supporting consultants through continued investment in people, manufacturing and services.
Investment
In response to growing demand for low- carbon ventilation, Breathing Buildings recently expanded its manufacturing operations at its Dudley facility. This move to a larger production unit has increased capacity and added a new customer showroom, helping consultants and clients better understand ventilation system design and application.
The investment includes enhanced
production capability, additional experienced staff, and increased warehouse capacity, allowing greater stock holding. This enables faster delivery from stock, helping ensure lead times meet tight project requirements. Meanwhile, a key part of the company’s investment in people is the return of Huw Poppy as Business Operations Director. Bringing over 20 years’ experience in low-energy ventilation, Huw has worked across design, project delivery and technical support, and is Secretary of the CIBSE Natural Ventilation Group. Breathing Buildings is also strengthening its internal design team and external sales support, reflecting the growing importance of early-stage engagement and technical collaboration in delivering compliant and efficient ventilation strategies. Rejoining
alongside Huw is James Hammick as Specification Sales Manager for the South-East. With more than two decades of experience in low-carbon ventilation, he further strengthens the company’s ability to support consultants throughout specification. Breathing Buildings’ experienced team
remains central to its strategy, with many employees bringing more than a decade of expertise in the design, delivery, and commissioning of natural, hybrid, and mechanical ventilation systems. This includes a knowledgeable project engineering and installation team, supporting clients delivering On Time, In Full (OTIF).
Ventilation strategies
This is all underpinned by a portfolio that enables consultants to specify the right ventilation for each project. The company now offers an entire ventilation range, including natural, hybrid, and mechanical ventilation, to suit a wide range of commercial applications. The pioneer of hybrid ventilation systems,
Breathing Buildings’ award-winning Natural Ventilation with Heat Recycling (NVHR®) range, is central to the company’s success. As a hybrid solution, it combines natural and mechanical ventilation in a single system and is particularly well-suited to buildings with high heat gains, such as schools, offices, and sports halls.
Building on this, its NVHRe range incorporates a low-resistance heat exchanger, allowing the unit to benefit from both heat recycling and heat recovery, reclaiming even more heat. This improves energy efficiency, enhances occupant comfort and allows users to include
it within building energy assessments (SBEM). Meanwhile, for spaces requiring mechanical solutions, its MVHRe range offers high-efficiency mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.
Maintaining Performance
In addition to design and specification support, Breathing Buildings also provides ongoing servicing and maintenance to ensure systems continue to perform as intended. As building performance comes under greater scrutiny, this lifecycle approach is becoming increasingly important. While Breathing Buildings marks its 20-year milestone, its focus remains on the future. Through continued investment in people, manufacturing, design and servicing, it is helping consultants deliver the next generation of low-carbon high-performance buildings.
