y grandchildren visited over Easter and Daisy, 6, wanted to know where water comes from. A sensible question about something that should concern us all.

Population growth, climate change and the need for new homes places ever greater pressure on our resources and the supply of fresh, clean water could become a serious issue – perhaps not in my lifetime, but possibly in Daisy’s.

The UK population is projected to increase by 15% to 74.3 million by mid-2039, with an annual average growth rate of 0.6%. So it was interesting to hear that Arup is calling on arid cities to move on from a 1950s’ paradigm of city planning and design, or

face becoming increasingly less habitable as they become drier.

Its report, Cities Alive: Rethinking Cities in Arid Environments, outlines three key principles in shaping city-building in arid regions for the 21st Century. u Cities need to learn from the past and make use of locally adapted, climate-specific design solutions. u They need to invest in green and blue infrastructure to increase the resilience of arid cities, and u They need to design intelligent buildings and public spaces that respond to the demands of the climate.

The report also urges cities to learn from innovations such as industrial-scale fog and dew

harvesting and cooling pavements that can reduce ambient temperatures by up to 7 degrees.

The authors warn that

technologies of the last century, such as air conditioning, have allowed the “explosive but unsustainable growth of arid cities”.

Where I live in the water-logged Fens, water shortages are a

remote possibility. It’s the largest area of the UK below sea level! But we should be worried about where the water comes from – even in a temperate climate like ours.
