Situated on the Royal Mile, Mylnes Court is a complex of buildings that includes three halls of residence, housing 176 postgraduate students in self-catered flats. A central boiler house provides space heating, domestic hot water and pre-heating of ventilation air in air handling units. “The original system was designed to operate with medium temperature hot water but, at a later date, this was changed to a low temperature hot water system,” explained specifier, Engright’s David McNeill. “As the boilers were still in good condition at the time, they were retained and adjusted to operate with lower flow and return water temperatures. However, as they got older a decision was taken to upgrade them.


“We selected Hoval boilers again as they offer the required efficiency, and their compact design helped to address space issues in the boiler house,” he continued.

A boiler upgrade at Mylnes Court, University of Edinburgh has seen ageing Hoval boilers replaced with the company’s high eciency SR Plus and UltraGas boilers. The new boilers were specifled by Engright Engineering Consultants and installed by contractors Taylor and Fraser.


Following a technical appraisal and compeve tender, Riello burners were deemed the best match for the refurbished boilers at a high proflle government site in Swansea, managed on behalf of Telereal Trillium by Arthur Portelli of Oakbury Building Services Consultants.

The three 2.5 MW burners at the Swansea site were installed in 1982 to meet a site demand of around 5MW with N+1 resilience so that heat loads could be met with one boiler offline for maintenance or repair. Because of the age of the burners, and efficiency issues, Telereal Trillium undertook a technical review to assess condition and future operational life of the boiler plant. After considering the options, a comprehensive refurbishment was the best option to bring them up to the standard of any new boiler on the market. A further benefit of refurbishment was reduced disruption, taking advantage of the N+1 configuration.


The refurbishment by Steam Plant Hire (Halesowen) included installation of new high efficiency insulation, refractory, control wiring, casings, gas and oil pipe systems and replacement of the obsolete burners.


Selecting the correct burner system was critical to achieving the required combustion efficiency, along with improved turndown and low emissions (including NOx). Following a full burner matching process by Riello RLS300 EV O2 BLU low NOx dual- fuel burners were identified as offering the best option.


Arthur Portelli commented: “This was a particularly challenging project for a whole number of reasons and I was impressed with the manner that the team handled all the problems we encountered at the design, tender and project stage.


“The support from the Riello sales and technical teams has been first class, only equalled by the burners that have lived up to all expectations,” he added.

College LED curved profile, linear fluorescent luminaires were selected for the dining areas, communal hall and parts of the offices. The IP44 rated fitting has a clear prismatic diffuser in tough polycarbonate for specific light control and the impact/vandal resistance perfect for teaching establishments.


Thorn’s CiviTEQ, Deco LED and Eyekon fittings have been used for the external illumination to create an attractive and welcoming appearance for the academy.
