WASTE MANAGEMENT & WATER TREATMENT
operate regardless of usage. Using just 0.5 litres of water per flush, this system can save up to 182,000 litres annually per urinal, equating to £557 in cost savings and a reduction of 0.06 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per urinal.

cisterns and connecting directly to the mains water supply. Instead of relying on a cistern to refill, these systems use dynamic water pressure to deliver an immediate and efficient single flush, unlike manual toilets which may need to be flushed more than once, wasting water. The direct flush design also eliminates common problems associated with cisterns, such as leaks and the need for frequent maintenance. Urinal and toilet solutions, such as Cistermiser’s,
are designed to improve water efficiency and hygiene while reducing maintenance requirements. Easyflush Direct, designed for toilets, provides a hygienic, mains-fed flush with minimal water use and maintenance requirements. The system features two modes: ‘wave,’ which activates with a simple hand gesture, and ‘walkaway,’ which flushes automatically when the user leaves. For urinals, the Direct Flush system is similarly effective. Equipped with PIR sensors, it only flushes individual urinals when necessary, avoiding the waste of traditional auto-flush cisterns that
Sensor-based technology is also transforming water management in commercial properties by ensuring water flows only when needed. A dripping tap may seem insignificant, but it can waste up to 5,500 litres of water annually. Sensor taps are designed to activate only when they detect the presence of hands beneath the spout. Once hands are removed, the sensor immediately triggers the tap to stop the flow of water. They also avoid the needless heating of water and improve hygiene by reducing the need for physical contact with tap handles. The Vecta+ series also has an intelligent safety shutoff after 60 seconds of continuous use, further preventing water wastage or potential flooding. The entire washroom can in fact be controlled by sensors, preventing water flow until someone enters the room. The Sensazone system, for instance, is an intelligent leak prevention system that uses sensors to automatically open the water outlets, allowing water to flow when a washroom is occupied, it then shuts off the water once no motion is detected. This reduces the risk of flooding when buildings become unoccupied for long periods of time, minimising utility bills and water wasted.
Benefits
Upgrading to water-efficient systems offers significant advantages. With energy prices rising and budgets under pressure, the financial savings from reduced water
wastage and maintenance demands are compelling. For example, based on 15 flushes per day, the Direct Flush Discreet system will save £557 per year/per toilet so it pays for itself in just eight months. Across properties with multiple washroom facilities, the cumulative savings in water costs and CO2 emissions can be substantial. Adopting modern, efficient plumbing solutions is not only a practical response to DEFRA’s targets but also a vital step towards ensuring the UK’s long-term water security. By addressing inefficiencies in washroom systems, businesses can make meaningful strides in sustainability, safeguard their budgets and play a key role in conserving one of our most valuable resources. With solutions like direct flushing systems, sensor- based technologies and leak prevention measures, the tools to tackle water waste are readily available. The challenge now lies in implementing them effectively and ensuring that commercial properties are prepared to meet the demands of the future.
