B< Press fittings from Conex Bänninger were selected by Thomas Hanna & Co Ltd as the pipework jointing solution for the domestic services installation on the £22m new-build

Devenish College in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. The new secondary school, built on a greenfield site, is a split-

level design over three floors accommodating up to 800 pupils. The accommodation includes six science labs, home economics rooms, art rooms, IT suites, general teaching rooms, staff rooms, as well as toilet facilities for pupils and staff. There is also a standalone sports block comprising of a four-court multi-purpose sports hall, fitness suite, teaching and changing facilities – all with direct access to the four pitches at the lower end of the site. M & E Contractors Thomas Hanna & Co Ltd were responsible

for the entire Mechanical Installation throughout the project, with services including Underfloor Heating, Domestic Plumbing Services, Building Management Systems, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Soils &

Wastes - all fed from two purpose-built plantrooms. Conex Bänninger was procured as their preferred supplier on

this project. Company Director Martin Hanna commented: “We were impressed

with the quality of the >B< Press fittings which were ideally suited to the task and met with our requirements for the project. “Using the right products for the job is vitally important. Conex Bänninger Regional Technical Sales Manager Tom Dickson visited us ‘on-site’ a couple of times to discuss the product and we were happy with the support he gave us. “The fact that the >B< Press fittings are flame-free and provide a

secure and leak-free joint was a crucial factor in using them for the pipework joints, and fitted on the domestic services for the hot, hot water return, and cold-water circuits.” Main project contractor: Glasgiven Contracts in Co. Down. M & E consultants: Caldwell Consulting in Belfast.

he former headquarters of British iconic retailer Woolworths located at 242 Marylebone Road in London, is a striking building constructed of red bricks with a facade of Portland Stone to the

front elevation. It is currently being transformed into homes, offices and retail premises, including an events auditorium, rooftop bar, coffee shop, cyclist zone and health and wellbeing amenities. While the restoration is underway, the contractor has installed site welfare facilities, including several WC blocks, for the construction workforce. Initially, the WCs relied on gravity drainage to discharge the

waste to a soil and vent pipe some 40m away. However, blockages occurred and there were concerns that the situation would worsen as the full complement of workers arrived on site. An enquiry for a solution was lodged with the Saniflo technical team who swiftly visited the site to scope out the requirement and recommended a Zehnder Kompaktboy Duplex lifting station. The unit was able to installed below the WC blocks, in the basement, allowing for optimum gravity fall and pumping the waste back to the main

sewer. The powerful, 3-phase pump, which can be integrated into the building management system if required, has two vortex pumps as a fail-safe precaution. This feature provides continuity of operation, which is critical to the building works. Tim Pestell, Managing Director of Saniflo is delighted to be involved in another project in the Capital, which is preserving iconic and historical buildings for future generations. He says: “As a company we enjoy being involved with change of use projects such as these. Since the installation of the pump, the drainage issues have been solved and the refurbishment is going forward without the worry of failing WCs. Saniflo is often involved in ensuring important projects go ahead by providing pumps, lifting stations and macerators for site welfare facilities and for any number of building and renovation projects. There really is a Saniflo product for every job. Our technical team is always on hand to provide advice and it’s always advisable to speak to the team at the outset of project to avoid potential problems.”

horn and its sister brand Zumtobel, both lighting brands of the Zumtobel Group, collaborated with environmental building services consultancy Wallace Whittle to provide low energy

and low glare lighting for the Greenock Health and Care Centre. The new primary care facility combines various health and

care services for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) and Inverclyde Health and Social Care Partnership. The design of the building aimed to reduce CO2 emissions and meet the target principles of ‘Very Good’ BREEAM Healthcare. The lighting design included Thorn’s IQ Wave, Chalice, Omega Pro

2, Aquaforce Pro, Voyager Star Emergency, Katona and Zumtobel’s ONDARIA and PANOS infinity, offering a bright modern look throughout the building. Zumtobel’s LITENET lighting controls were enabled to ensure energy-saving and low carbon emissions. The selected luminaires feature low surface areas, designed to avoid dust and dirt collecting, making them easy to clean and reducing the risk of infection.

alongside Hoskins and Anderson Bell Christie, respectively. Energy efficiency is at the core of our design ideals, and the consistent support from the Zumtobel Group across both projects, a manufacturer who shares our philosophies on quality of product and service, helped drive a very efficient scheme for the lighting and lighting control installations. The design and product support from the Zumtobel Group across

both projects were exemplary; nothing was an issue, and they were always quick to respond to all technical queries as the projects progressed at pace.” The building received an EPC rating of ‘B’ and a Building Standards

www.zumtobel.com Luceco’s Platform at Q-Park Cardiff Bay L

uceco has recently supplied energy saving luminaires and lighting control system to Q-Park Cardiff Bay. Q-Park is one of Europe’s leading parking service providers and is known for high quality and well-managed parking facilities in strategic locations, including all major cities.

The project consisted of 18 floors over 2 phases, the lighting solution using Climate Extra and Platform Lighting Controls. 33W 6ft (1800mm) single array luminaires were installed, replacing the 126W fittings previously in place. Delivering the benefits of polycarbonate construction, opal diffuser and speed-fit installation with no requirement to remove the LED gear tray, Climate Extra is ideal for industrial and harsh environments offering 100,000 hours operational life and an efficacy of 142 Llm/ cW. This linear IP65 weatherproof luminaire includes a variety of driver options including, Digital Dimmable, Emergency and Microwave, comes as standard with anti-tamper stainless steel clips and can be surface mounted or suspended through metal fixing points. The Climate Extra luminaires used throughout the installation were controlled by Luceco’s wireless

lighting control system – Platform. Platform is an innovative controls solution making the planning, configuration, and commissioning of wireless lighting controls accessible to many applications from large open plan commercial environments and warehouse spaces to smaller layouts. Simple operation of the system provides various lighting control options including, dimming, scene

setting, presence and daylight control, all helping to reduce energy consumption and operating costs, whilst creating a safe lit environment. The lighting control strategy included segregating the project into floors and based on any linked fitting detecting a pedestrian or vehicle, turning on all lighting on the relevant floor. A 10 minute hold

time was programmed so once the last fitting on the floor had last detected movement, it waited for 10 minutes before going back into to a standby level. The standby level included completely off, or a lower background level of 5% illumination to ensure there was always a low level of light in the car park for the safety and wellbeing of occupants. The stairwells were commissioned as two

distinct zones. If movement was detected in either stairwell the entire stairwell was lit to 100% to ensure safe ingress & egress from the building. With many organisations looking to become

more environmentally friendly and reduce their energy and operating costs, lighting controls can help save around 60 - 70% on energy consumption and ensure spaces are lit appropriately to provide safety, security, and comfort. Platform offers high value return-of-investment on new or existing lighting installations as well as extending the life of the luminaires due to reduced operating hours. The installation of the lighting along with fire and security up grades were carried out by Evans Electrical Limited.
