EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Data centres turn to sustainable solutions

T

he data centre industry has grown rapidly over recent years with a reported doubling of investment year on year in 2021 and no signs that the industry will slow down. A growing digital dependency means that, even though we might not realise it, these facilities have a bearing on just about every aspect of our lives. Therefore, it’s in all our interests that they are able to operate safely and securely and in the most cost- effective and energy efficient way. Energy is particularly important as data centres must be able to operate 24/7, 365 days a year without interruption and can potentially be significantly energy intensive.

Essential cooling accounts for much of this energy usage as it stands to reason that an overheated server simply won’t do the job properly.

With data centres increasingly turning to sustainable solutions across the globe, it’s a good time to review some of the systems on offer. In this month’s focus on data centres, top suppliers to the industry including Carlo Gavazzi (Pg 20), Airedale (Pg 18)offer some insight into energy-saving solutions from robust metering to sustainable cooling. As data centres grow, so do security needs, particularly as some organisations rely so heavily on the cloud for stored data. A breach could be devastating for any

organisation, making security a top concern for data centre managers. Though cyber security is what automatically springs to mind, on Pg 22 we address the innovative uses for AI in enhancing physical security in data centres.
