EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Price over Lives?
A
s the Grenfell tragedy continues to unfurl before the eyes of the public, industry is forced to face the sad fact that past priorities may have been fatally flawed. This issue we speak to some big names about the importance of proper Maintenance and Refurbishment in our buildings and the new ways we can tackle the endless issues time throws at us while remaining true to the original spirit of our heritage buildings.
To me, the trickle of facts coming from the Grenfell investigation sum up a particularly poignant uncovering of attitude within the construction industry. When it came to the building of that tower block (and others), it was seen as an opportunity for profit rather than as the
future home of hundreds of families. It is often a sad story that inspires scrutiny and change. There are, however, some great examples of change through inspiration and a drive for social and environmental evolution. The Eco Village in Lammas is one such place. This month’s Environmental Awareness looks at the thinking behind the project and the lessons learned so far. Meanwhile, the BCIA’s Terry Sharp explores the benefits of inhouse training, and Smith’s Simon Butcher writes about providing an effective heating and controls solution for small public buildings in this month’s Ask the Expert column.
