Smith’s SMART Control provides remote control and monitoring of the heating for a charity shop and café
Essex into a shop, café and donations centre. The area where the shop and café were to be located was made up of full height glazing meaning providing efficient and effective heating would be a challenge. The charity wanted to be able to control the heating remotely as well as managing and monitoring local controls to ensure effective heating levels. Finally, as the charity wanted to maximise what wall space they did have for merchandising in the shop, and for tables in the café.
S
mith’s was contacted by the heating contractor refurbishing a former car showroom for St Helena Hospice in north
The solution developed by Smith’s and the
contractor was to install Caspian Skyline CT60 EC fan convectors in the existing ceiling grid. This maximised the wall space as stipulated by the charity and used the existing heat generator to provide the Low Temperature Hot Water for the Caspian fan convectors. To fulfil the requirement in the project brief
of being able to fully control the heating the Caspian Skylines were fitted with SMART Controls with the shop and café being set up as separate heating zones using SMART thermostats. The system incorporated wireless relays to control the zone valves.
To provide heating in the Donation and
Sorting Area a Smith’s Ecovector HL 4000 fitted with a wireless relay to enable/disable the heater was installed. To provide temperature monitoring and remotecontrol App controlled thermostats were also installed. This also provides tamperproof operation.

performance through recommissioning
O
ne aspect within the Building Services arena that doesn’t get as much attention as it should, is on the topic of recommissioning.
This under focussed area can play a very important role in contributing to a buildings energy use and re commissioning of any buildings’ central plant equipment such as the pumps – should really be undertaken every five years, or more frequently if there has been any change of use. Routinely servicing sophisticated and complex
mechanical equipment, which includes pump and pumping systems, is important, but is limited in its scope. This is because as building usage changes over time, this can affect the overall configuration, use and of course the demand on pumps or pump systems. Equally the overall pump operation building levels will benefit from an overhaul where the opportunity to look at HVAC loads will lead to a better performance and improved comfort levels. It is true to say that although all pumps will
benefit from being recommissioning, the following functionalities should be given priority: booster sets; pressurisation units; circulators and longcoupled pumps. Opting to have your pump equipment re commissioned by the Grundfos Service team could significantly decrease your heating bills and carbon footprint and their expertise extends to many different pump manufacturers’ designs and a wide range of application types.

ntegrated high performance 4way distribution comfort module with heating, cooling and ventilation. The new generation of PARASOL Zenith features fixed or variable
airflow control from the same basic platform, which makes selection easier. This, alongside fewer variants, each covering a wide range of air volume capabilities, and simplified logistics on site offers greater flexibility and simplicity in terms of future rebuilding work and customisation. Optimised for low energy consumption, PARASOL Zenith manages
high air flow at low system pressure. The increased cooling capacity also allows a lower duct system pressure to be used, or a higher cooling water temperature, saving energy and improving room comfort further. Intended to work condensation free, PARASOL Zenith requires no drainage system or filter. With a quick bracket for time saving and easy installation on account
of low weight, compact dimensions and optional air connections on short or long sides, the stylish design with optional perforation patterns can be retrospectively upgraded from CAV to VAV, and can also be integrated in the WISE demand controlled ventilation system. PARASOL Zenith is a 4way air discharge comfort module featuring an
induction function. Exactly as in a climate beam, the supply air from a central air handling unit is used to create induction across a coil to deliver cooling or heating, meaning it does not include an integrated fan or other moving parts. This gives very quiet operation and minimal maintenance requirements. Unlike a 2way air discharge climate beam, air distribution to the
room occurs from all 4 sides of the unit, meaning as large areas of the ceiling as possible are used to spread the air, thus ensuring comfort in the occupied zone.

www.bsee.co.uk With a variable kfactor setting and large air flow range, PARASOL
Zenith is available both as a CAV product with fixed kfactor, and is easy to upgrade to a VAV function or with the help of different accessories. It is also possible to order as a VAV variant with all necessary controls factory fitted, with control or actuator for air flow control (010 V). As greater demands are being made to offer customised office
solutions and to easily change the floor layout for new or existing tenants if changed needs arise, it is important to take this into consideration as early as the design phase, as this will minimise future costs for rebuilding. Regardless of the scenario, the new PARASOL Zenith, through its simplicity in terms of air flow range, operation and commissioning, gives all the possibilities to find this flexible and optimal solution.

common methods of installing piping systems in many countries, press fittings offer a number of advantages that often make them a better choice than welding or brazing. Press fittings are an excellent solution for joining pipes.
I
Saves time and money With press fittings, connections can be made in a fraction of the time. In addition, much less training is required to operate the press tool compared to welding, brazing or soldering.
Tight connection The operation of pressing tools varies but one thing always applies: the strength of the connections. As long as the pipe is correctly prepared, the connection is unbreakable and just as durable as a welded or soldered joint.
n the past, installers traditionally relied on welding and brazing to make safe connections. While these are still
More flexibility As press fittings are available in copper, copper alloys such as CuSi, stainless steel and carbon steel, they work with practically any pipe system made of these materials.
Increased safety Press fittings offer additional safety as no heat or (open) flames are required to make connections. This reduces the risk of injury during work on the construction site.
Quick repairs Even if the pipe system is wet, press connections can still be made (caution with carbon steel!). This makes them well suited for use in many commercial and industrial installations. SANHA offers more than 8,500 articles for safe and hygienic piping systems up to dimension DN 150.

Source Heat Pumps in the UK. With installers seeing an increase
P
in demand from homeowners for energy efficient sustainable heating, sales of air source heat pumps are set to grow as an alternative solution to conventional boilers. As the country’s most experienced integrated renewables and underfloor heating specialist, NuHeat’s team is well placed to fulfil the upsurge in demand for Panasonic’s range of Aquarea AirtoWater heat pumps and cloud based smart controllers. Brian Woodcock, NuHeat’s National Renewables Manager,
comments, “With the market clearly moving towards renewable heat sources, we are seeing continuing strong growth for air source heat pumps right across the UK. With the addition of Panasonic’s Aquarea range offering great quality and reliability as well as an impressively wide range of capacities and capabilities, we are very excited to be able to offer our customers a complete package of heat pump and underfloor heating solutions to suit properties of almost any size." Jose Manuel Alves, UK Country Manager for Panasonic explains, “We
welcome NuHeat to our team. NuHeat is wellestablished in the heating market and has a very knowledgeable team providing system design, support with MCS requirements and great customer service.”

Grundfos have the systems knowledge to go beyond the pump
and that many are needlessly inefficient. Equally there is an awareness that by focussing on changing to high efficiency pumps that incorporate advanced motor technology, an average pump’s energy consumption can be reduced by up to 60%. However, efficiencies are only one aspect of good pump design, and
T
therefore this aspect should not be seen as the ultimate goal, but rather as a part of a much bigger systems picture.
In order to
understand the true value of pump efficiency, the complete endtoend installation needs to come under scrutiny, as opposed to just taking a view on a the pump in isolation. By thinking beyond the pump and taking the entire pumping system into
account it then becomes possible to optimise the total integration of the pumps, drives, controls & protection, measurement and communication units, to ensure that they work together as part of one system. By talking to a manufacturer like Grundfos, you can incorporate
specific demands with application knowhow. These requirements are then translated into stateoftheart pump intelligence specifically aimed at commercial building services applications. This holistic approach that encompasses the integrity of the entire system, is known as Grundfos iSOLUTIONS.
