Keystone Lintels has provided a range of innovave, prefabricated brickwork soluons as part of the restoraon and conversion of a series of barns into new homes along with the creaon of nine new build houses.
Church Farm Barns in the village of Acton in Cheshire is located in a conservation area near the market town of Nantwich. Built by Chamberlain Developments, the second phase of the project required brickwork design for the new-build homes, which was in keeping with the heritage sensitivity of the site and adjacent barns and farmhouse. The specification required a number of unique, one-piece brick slip feature lintels which were designed by Keystone’s technical team and manufactured in a factory-controlled environment negating the need for complex brick cutting on-site.
The nine new-build homes feature a combination of eighty bespoke Flat Gauge Brick Slip Feature Arches, as well as Bullseye and Parabolic Lintels, each requiring a flawless brick surround finish to match the brick being used on-site and in keeping with the appearance of the converted barns.
Fabricated off-site, Keystone’s dedicated technical team ensured each bespoke lintel was manufactured to the size, shape and aesthetic requirements within the project build schedule.

Keystone collected a consignment of bricks from the developer to ensure the brick slips matched the ones being used on site. These were then cut and bonded onto load bearing lintels using a BBA approved construction adhesive.
The patented perforated design of a Keystone Brick Slip Feature Lintel allows the adhesive to squeeze through the perforations and form a ‘mushroom’ on the inside, providing a mechanical lock between the steel lintel and the bricks.

BG Electrical has supplied wiring accessories for a major project involving the construction of 372 townhouses. The Nexus Storm Weatherproof range of switches and socket outlets were specified for this project.
Nexus Storm is a selection of IP66 rated wiring accessories designed to protect against water and dust ingress in the most arduous of conditions. Features include a robust, high impact and UV stable housing complete with see-through covers. Nexus Storm is designed to be quick and easy to wire with multiple gland entry positions whilst still maintaining an ergonomic but user-friendly design. A recent addition includes the external WiFi extender socket which is easy to install and setup with one-touch WPS and is perfect for streaming music and videos or playing online games outside in the garden and is compatible with all wireless broadband routers.

Carrier Rental Systems has supplied 1.6MW of auxiliary cooling for Royal Papworth Hospital’s site in Cambridge. The system maintains ideal temperatures and humidity in crical areas of the hospital at all mes.
Royal Papworth, the UK's main heart and lung transplant centre, recently located to a new purpose-built site at Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
Additional cooling was required to support the hospital’s energy centre to ensure optimum conditions were maintained throughout the building during peak times. The turnkey project for main contractor Skanska included the supply of four high-performance chillers, remote power generators, crane lift equipment, scaffolding and pipework insulation.
At the heart of the site’s energy centre is a large tank that acts as a thermal store, based on 20% glycol in water. Carrier Rental Systems supplied four Carrier AquaSnap 30RB402 air- cooled liquid chillers running on R410A refrigerant, operating in two pairs configured in series. Bespoke manifolds were created to make
connection easier and ensure greater control. The chillers, positioned on the roof, are powered by two SLD diesel generators, each supplying 500kVA of remote power. Due to the close proximity to the hospital, acoustic attenuation barriers are used around the chillers and generators to acoustically seal them and ensure low noise for patients and staff. Plant control and integration were important aspects of the project. Flow meters and temperature sensors were installed at key points in the cooling circuit to improve control and optimise performance. Skanska connected the chillers to the site’s Building Management System, giving fine high-level control of units and enabling them to operate with maximum efficiency alongside existing plant.

VentAxia’s MVHR Provides Excellent Indoor Air Quality in SelfBuild Project
VentAxia has supplied a LoCarbon Sennel Kinec High Flow Mechanical Venlaon with Heat Recovery (MVHR) unit to a 3,000sq . selfbuild smart home in County Down, Northern Ireland.
Whilst the fully-automated smart home was being built, the owners lived in a rented standard block construction 70s bungalow with no MVHR. They began monitoring the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and CO2 whilst living there and then continued to do so in their new home, which features the Vent-Axia MVHR system. Since moving into the new house with the Sentinel Kinetic High Flow, there has been a huge improvement in IAQ compared to the temporary accommodation.
In the rented bungalow, total VOC levels regularly exceeded 400parts-per-billion (ppb) and over 500ppb on some occasions. This is over the generally acknowledged ‘acceptable’ levels of between 50 and 325ppb. However, in stark contrast, in the new self-build home with MVHR installed the occupants now have markedly improved total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) levels which rarely exceed 200ppb and are, on average around 100ppb. Similarly, in the bungalow CO2 was also a problem with levels often reaching or exceeding 900ppm and rarely under 700ppm in the bungalow compared to an average of between 600-700ppm in the smart home. Typically, CO2 concentrations indoors range between 400-1,000ppm, the lower the level the better.
Sentinel Kinetic MVHR units feature integral humidity sensors for intelligent air quality control. The sensor increases speed in proportion to relative humidity levels, saving energy and reducing noise. It also reacts to small but rapid increases in humidity, even if the normal trigger threshold is not reached. This feature ensures adequate ventilation, even for the smallest wet room. A summer bypass provides passive cooling when conditions allow whilst a frost protection mode ensures maximum ventilation during the coldest periods. A digital controller is mounted on the front of the units and a remotely-wired version has also been included for each.
The units benefit from the latest high efficiency, backward curved impeller design, ensuring the lowest possible energy consumption, ultra-quiet operation and an exceptional performance range covering small one bed apartments to the largest of houses. Recognised in SAP PCDB, the lightweight MVHR unit is simple to install with a horizontal duct option for space-saving installations and a unique folding filter for removal when access is restricted. The models can be mounted vertically in a roof space or on a suitable wall and ducting can be attached to the unit horizontally, vertically or both. Left or right-hand installation further adds to its installation flexibility.
