EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Protecting buildings from the unpredictable
T
hreats to commercial or public buildings come in all shapes and sizes and those responsible have a critical duty to ensure occupants are protected, even when things go wrong. Few premises and businesses are completely invincible, so for building managers the best course of action is to be well prepared in the event of a fire, cyber-attack, accident, or even terrorism. In our Safety, Fire & Security feature this month we’ve tackled all three topics.
• On page 10, a security and access management company highlights Martyn’s Law, named after Martyn Hett, a victim of the Manchester Arena attack in 2017. The law introduces a tiered ‘protect duty’ requiring organisations to implement measures to reduce vulnerability to terrorist threats. PFL – Access Management argues that security should start at the design phase.

• On page 12, a heritage consultancy spotlights vertical transport systems in particular how changing requirements under the Building Safety Act are seeing lift upgrades emerge as a key interface between fire safety, accessibility and heritage.
• On page 13, the Business Sprinkler Alliance draws
from three major fires at transport hubs to examine the gap between the resilience of critical infrastructure and the standards our built environment delivers, suggesting that it is critical to close this gap. • Finally, on page 23, a cyber security expert explains multi-factor authentication and its role in keeping buildings and systems safe by requiring users to verify their identity with more than a simple password. Other features this month include Heat Pumps, Humidity Control and Building Controls & Technology.
