leisure centre operator has cut energy use at its pools by 30 percent following the installation of ABB variable speed drives (VSDs).
ABB drives rated between 4 kW and 30 kW have
been installed on air handling units (AHUs) and pool circulation pumps in 60 of the leisure centres operated by Places for People Leisure. This has reduced power consumption by matching the speed of the motors driving the applications to the required demand. The ABB drives were retrofitted by Powermaster
Leisure Limited, a company specialising in energy‐ saving technologies. The VSDs on both the pool circulation pumps and the AHUs reduce motor
speed by 10 percent during the day and 20 percent at night, giving a total energy saving over a 24‐hour period of approximately 30 percent. ABB drives were selected because they are robust
enough to withstand the demanding conditions of swimming pool plant rooms, says John Moffatt, managing director of Powermaster. “The vast majority of Powermaster’s VSD installations are in swimming pool plant rooms, where the atmosphere can be corrosive because of the chemicals used. It is therefore essential to have a product that can cope, long term, with these conditions. The ABB drives have double‐ coated circuit boards to protect against such environments.”

optimised to a specific application are joined joined by TINGE light colour which makes warm tones appear more vibrant. All benefit from greater efficiency in high‐output mode and are available with a 17 mm light emission surface. The dimmable LED modules for spotlights and downlights have in improved efficiency of up to 30 percent and better colour rendering as well as a robust ZHAGA compliant, 50 mm package. A more stable connection between the chip and the package is achieved and thermal conductivity is improved. New versions with a 17 mm light‐emitting surface (LES 17) close the gap between 15 mm (LES 15) and 19 mm (LES 19) modules so there is a choice of different emission angles for spotlights. Thanks to the greater energy efficiency of the modules a higher luminous flux can be achieved relative to the power consumption. Less power is needed to produce the same luminous flux as the predecessor modules. The LED modules are compatible with all drivers in the standard portfolio, resulting in numerous possible combinations tailored precisely to the specific applications.

content and a fully modulating pre‐mix burner with 8:1 turndown means output closely matches demand keeping energy use and carbon emissions to a minimum. This helps Impetus heaters achieve efficiencies as high as 96% (gross CV) and all three models are, therefore, ‘A’ rated under the European Eco Design Energy Label rating system. Impetus heaters are extremely quiet in
operation and, because they produce very low NOx emissions of 29 mg/kWh or less, they are very well suited for applications subject to BREEAM assessment. They also work particularly well when
installed alongside solar thermal installations to provide ‘top up’ hot water when solar input is low or at times of peak hot water demand. Robustly built, the Impetus heaters
employ a 316 titanium stainless steel heat exchanger and are capable of working with water pressures up to 10 bar. To ease installation, they can be supplied with multiple flue options for maximum siting flexibility. They can also be adapted to work as part of an unvented system and a condensate neutralisation kit can also be fitted if required. “This is an important diversification for
Lochinvar,” said managing director David Pepper. “We built our reputation with larger systems and are more associated with commercial building services solutions. However, with this product we can now take our tried and tested, fully condensing water
heater technology into the growing residential and small commercial sector. “Modern standards of insulation and
airtightness have reduced the demand for space heating in new build and refurbished homes and offices. This increases the importance of ensuring hot water supplies come from renewable and/or highly energy efficient sources,” added Mr Pepper. “Impetus is perfectly designed to slot into this growing market.”

Ecoflam celebrates 25 years in the UK and IRL with British Touring Car ticket giveaway
L Adveco TOTEM m‐CHP for rugby school E
stablished in 1567, Rugby School is one of Britain’s oldest and most prestigious public schools. Its on‐site sports centre is one of the best equipped in the area, with a 25m pool, fitness suite, and many courts and pitches. The sports centre’s ageing
heating and hot water system was renovated in 2016 to feature an Adveco TOTEM T20 m‐CHP and 5 Upsilon boilers. The very high efficiency of the new installation provides valuable energy savings and significantly reduces carbon emissions. By connecting an automotive engine directly to a generator, on‐ site power generation efficiencies rival that of a conventional power plant while avoiding the losses
inherent in transmission. Waste heat from the engine is recovered through heat exchangers to provide energy for a heating or hot water system at no extra cost. Sports, swimming, and leisure
facilities are a perfect application for micro‐cogeneration, where there is a large and continuous demand for heating, hot water, and power.
Since its commissioning, the
TOTEM T20 at Rugby School Sports Centre is estimated to have generated equivalent fuel savings of £1,018 per month and is projected to reduce the building’s emissions by over 51 tonnes of CO2 and 123.8kg of NOX per year.

pipework systems, GF Piping Systems has taken a further step forward in facilitating the use of Building Information Modelling – normally referred to as BIM ‐ by adding the EcoFIT range to the product selection available to specifiers in the 3D format. The move will further enhance GF’s attractions to architects and engineers across the construction industry, especially those involved with public sector and high specification commercial developments such as the landmark tall buildings currently planned for London and other major cities. The EcoFIT BIM objects have been added to an on line library which already covers the COOL‐FIT 2.0, INSTAFLEX, AQUASYSTEM and malleable iron product ranges, making it even easier for project consultants and M&E specialists to specify GF.
Importantly, BIM for GF products have been created to operate with the industry’s preferred platform, Autodesk RevitR. Amongst the benefits to adopting BIM is the ability to explore a virtual view of completed installations, ensuring the efficient integration of multiple components and – of particular importance for building services – the avoidance of ‘clashes’ in often congested locations. Speed, accuracy and cost efficiency are all potential areas of improvement.
